End Toxic Lithium Battery Pollution

Target: Michael S. Regan, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Administrator

Goal: Stop the disposal of lithium batteries in improper places to prevent environmental harm.

At least 42 known fires have been ignited by the unethical disposal of lithium batteries into trash bins. Lithium and lithium-ion batteries have the tendency to ignite at any time. Their flammability is hazardous, and without the proper disposal, there is the possibility of homes and forests being started on fire. In trash bins, lithium batteries have the opportunity to harm people, wildlife, property and more. They can also transmit toxic gases into the environment, potentially killing off plant life and contributing to the destruction of natural habitats.

Lithium batteries also have disastrous ramifications when combined with water. When the batteries combine with liquids in trash cans, they may end up exploding. The best way to prevent these materials from harming the environment is to dispose of lithium batteries in proper hazardous waste collection bins in communities and/or households. Such batteries can also be recycled in battery electronic centers.

Sign this petition to prevent any further environmental destruction to come from the inadequate disposal of lithium batteries. They must be disposed of in facilities that can properly handle their chemical components without compromising the Earth’s atmosphere.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Administrator Regan,

In order to prevent any further environmental harm from occurring, a stop must be placed on the improper disposal of lithium batteries. Such batteries are incredibly flammable and pose harm to properties and the welfare of wildlife. If they are not disposed of in the proper hazardous waste facilities, they will continue to pose a threat to Earth’s atmosphere.

Encouraging communities to bring batteries to recycling facilities is the only option for reducing the amount of fires caused by batteries. When lithium batteries react with water and/or other waste products, they may ignite. In order to diminish this possibility, I urge you to put a halt to batteries being included in common household waste.

With the Earth’s environment facing severe repercussions, it is of utmost importance to stop communities from disposing of batteries in unfit facilities. Please stop the improper disposal of these chemical-containing materials.

Sincerely,
