Success: Crucial Emergency Alerts for Drivers Preserved

Target: Ed Markey, U.S. Senator

Goal: Thank leaders who are fighting for the continued inclusion of AM radio in automobiles.

The plans of many auto manufacturers to exclude AM radio from their new vehicles prompted an outcry from experts, politicians, and daily drivers. This ForceChange petition highlighted the concerns critics had with the planned exclusions, especially relating to emergency broadcast accessibility. Compelled by such concerns, companies and Congress itself are now taking action.

The Ford Motor Company reversed course after previously claiming that no “compelling need” existed for AM radio. The manufacturer had planned to drop the service from most, if not all, of its future models. But recently, Ford’s CEO announced that “after speaking with policy leaders about the importance of AM broadcast radio as a part of the emergency alert system, we’ve decided to include it on all 2024 vehicles.” Moreover, Ford will also offer owners of current vehicles without AM access software updates so they can get the service as well.

In the halls of Congress, the AM for Every Vehicle Act is also making its way through the legislative process. This bill—which enjoys bipartisan support and from the Federal Communications Commission and the National Association of Broadcasters—would require AM radio in all newly built vehicles. No costs would be passed on to the consumer.

Sign the petition below to support one of the most lasting and durable forms of communication in the world.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Senator Markey,

In the event of a catastrophic emergency, the only sounds some people may hear are the words of emergency broadcasters. AM radio and the 80 stations that are equipped with its backup communications ensure that populations far and wide will get these broadcasts no matter the crisis. This communication method has outlasted other forms because it possesses enduring value.

Thank you for recognizing the importance of AM, and thank you for championing and preserving its continued contributions by introducing the AM for Every Vehicle Act.

Sincerely,

  1. Thank you Senator Markey!!! I so appreciate your stepping in to inform others of what has all but been forgotten. In the end it is usually the old reliable things which Geert us through a tough time. Emergencies are just that! The old AM is a must in all cars and new radio devices. People must rely on the old, tired, ways as the usual updates just can’t be reliable as is the case in this situation. I am so grateful to you for insisting this value be placed on AM. You may have save million lives with this one action.

When looking to buy pull-out couches, there are several options to consider. You can check furniture stores such as IKEA, Ashley HomeStore, and Wayfair. Online marketplaces like Amazon and eBay also offer a wide range of choices. Additionally, consider local classifieds, thrift stores, and online classified websites like Craigslist for potential deals.
