Success: Marriage Equality Reigns Supreme

Target: Arturo Zaldívar, President of Mexico’s Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation

Goal: Support successful legal fight to lift prohibitions on same-sex marriage.

As in much of the world and as demonstrated in this ForceChange petition, marriage equality has experienced a long and arduous journey in Mexico. Civil unions were first approved in 2006, followed by the first same-sex marriages five years later. And in 2005, the nation’s Supreme Court formally lifted a ban on gay marriage but left the issue to individual states. Now, after decades of dedicated effort, marriage equality is a reality throughout all of Mexico.

Three states recently affirmed this right in their legal codes, and border state Tamaulipas has now joined the ranks as well. With this state’s decision, each of the 32 states has laws on the books for marriage equality. Chants of “yes, we can” followed the landmark decision.

Sign the petition below to join in the chorus of progress.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear President Zaldívar,

“Today is a historic day for the LGBTQ community and for Mexico. Today, we and our families are more visible, more equal, and we are a country with more justice.” These words of one activist spoke for many when Tamaulipas officially ended marriage inequality in Mexico. Your own statements of praise also had a tremendous impact.

As a representative and leader of Mexico’s legal system, thank you for lending your support to this important cause of rights and equality for all.

Sincerely,
