Stop Letting Thousands of Farm Animals Drown to Death

Target: Joseph R. Biden, President of the United States

Goal: Demand the U.S. ban the dangerous and often fatal export of live farm animals.

Animals bound for slaughter are transported by whatever means farmers deem necessary. This includes driving animals in hot, cramped vehicles for multiple days, hauling animals in overhead planes, or crowding them onto cargo ships. Livestock are often denied access to food and water during these lengthy trips, and are completely stressed out throughout the trips’ duration. Animals may die from dehydration, hunger, heat stroke, or from being trampled by one another. In addition, each transit method has a series of dangers, and live transport often ends in catastrophe. For example, more than 15,000 sheep drowned earlier this year after a live export ship sank in Sudan. More recently, the capsizing of a cattle vessel resulted in the premature death of 6,000 cattle and 41 crew members.Several countries have recognized the dangers associated with live exports and the unnecessary trauma it causes to farm animals. New Zealand and India have both recently made important changes to their own legislation, banning live animal export out of their countries. The passing of this law is a milestone for animal welfare, and will save the lives of tens of thousands of livestock.

Sign this petition to demand the U.S. enact similar legislation and ban the inhumane export of live animals within our own borders.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear President Biden,

The transport of animals to slaughter destinations is a particularly grueling journey. Farm animals are crammed into hot vessels–whether this be a motor vehicle, plane, or cargo ship of sorts–for upwards of weeks, usually without any access to food, water, or veterinary care. Millions of animals die of dehydration, heat stroke, hunger, or being trampled before ever even reaching a slaughterhouse. Others, still, die due to transit catastrophes. For example, more than 15,000 sheep drowned earlier this year after a live export ship sank in Sudan while, more recently, the capsizing of a cattle vessel resulted in the premature death of 6,000 cattle and 41 crew members.

India and New Zealand have recently joined several other countries in banning the unnecessary export of live animals. We are now asking you, President Biden, to follow suit and protect thousands of farm animals from easily preventable deaths.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]

Animal Agriculture is unsustainable as a food supply.Shipping is cruel and wasteful. As a species, we should go vegan,or, at least, stop breeding like flies!
