Stop Legalized Slaughter of Rare Wild Sheep

Target: Pascal Canfin, Chair of European Parliament Committee on the Environment

Goal: Don’t slaughter the rare mouflon sheep.

Once again, animals have made a home in a habitat forced upon them by humans. And once again, the humans are now declaring these animals “invasive” and legally eradicating them. This time, the location is a small Italian island known as Giglio, and the animals are a rare wild species of sheep. Without action, mouflon sheep could be culled en masse and essentially disappeared from the land they now call home.

The current sheep are thought to be ancestors of a group brought to the island in the 1960s by a landowner who abandoned the flock. They are not native to the area but have since settled across the island. Roughly 30 remain, but they are now the targets of a European Union (EU) sanctioned cull by hunters. The true reason for the targeting of these animals likely arises from complaints of local farmers that their crops are being compromised.

Advocates have sought to block the ongoing cull and potential future efforts through appeals to EU Parliament. They argue that the sheep should be relocated to the Italian mainland and perhaps even granted protected status. Sign the petition below to urge leaders to choose these life-saving approaches over needless slaughter.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Camfin,

The European biodiversity initiative should be an avenue for preserving and protecting at-risk animals, not ending their lives. The mouflon sheep of Giglio arrived on the island through no fault of their own, and they have peacefully lived on these lands for several decades. They should not be the target of a widespread cull meant to appease farmers that is disguised as conservation.

Please heed the calls of true conservationists who want to save these animals. If mouflon sheep cannot remain on Giglio, relocate them to a new home. And grant these animals legal protections that will safeguard them from systemic slaughter.

Sincerely,

  1. We, as human beings, have duty of care, to each other, ALL animals, and the planet. If we fail in this duty we fail our humanity. Killing is not the answer, protecting is the answer.

  2. People brought them there. It is now up to people to make sure they do not go extinct. Is there any wonder so many of us say we hate humans.

  3. How can killing these animals even be considered because they’ve become inconvenient for farmers to have around. It’s absolute nonsense and someone needs to come up with a plan to either move them or tell the farmers to put up fences around their crops. Killing the sheep should not even be considered!

    • This is how low humanity has sunk: killing natures finest beings for their stupidity and greed. There are many alternative solutions. Have they even considered re-greening all the land they have already left barrempn?

  4. Rose Coffey says:

Let’s start conserving what is left of our wildlife – look at all of the species of animals that have become extinct. What will we do when we run out of animals to destroy – look for types of people?

    • Agreed Animal Conservation!!! Why NOT relocate and preserve them. Too many humans like killing animals!!
      CULLING PEOPLE??? Excellent idea!!!
In light of all the violence and disruption caused by the ‘people’ on this earth, and too often, to nature, and it’s animals! If nature removed ‘man’ the world could be such a beautiful place. However we’ve already secured earth’s demise with our selfishness. Perhaps that’s Covid’s purpose? Humans are the most arrogant, ignorant, despicable and cruelest beasts that waste our oxygen. Our world will never be safe until humans are extinct!!!

  5. PLEASE PROTECT these Beautiful CREATURES!!!!

  6. STOP SLAUGHTERING RARE SHEEP AND ALL OTHER ANIMALS!!!!

  7. All wildlife of every type on this earth need to be protected from the horrors committed by thrill-killer, evil cruel punks. All that are found guilty of these heinous acts need to be removed from society forever. They are a menace to humans and animals…IN MY OPINION

  8. Once again, due to increased human theft and exploitation of a wild species’ habitat, they are to be slaughtered. This time it’s a rare species. Maybe we urgently need to put the brakes on the humans! Here’s one way to stop our unchecked “growth” that’s destroying the earth: https://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1088/1748-9326/aa7541/pdf. If not, there will be no planet and no animals left!

  9. I say we cull some people and all politicians. Politicians are the ones ruining our planet.

  10. Michelle Stewart says:

They must be protected forever. Stop killing them. Make it illegal to kill them

  11. Why do this? I thought the fit trade was stopped.

  12. These sheep are rare! They should be relocated somewhere, so they dont die out!

  13. Maria Bertrand says:

Pascal Canfin, Chair of European Parliament Committee for the Environment

This is human error that these rare sheep had to relocate and now they are seen, by you, as invasive!!!!!!!!

Relocate them….IT IS YOUR JOB TO PROTECT THEM AND ALL GOD’S CREATURES. KILL KILL KILL IS NOT EVER THE ANSWER!!!!!

  14. Typical of the evil scum savage human race!!!!!!

  15. Barbara Garrison says:

    That’s their only answer to
managing the sheep? Let’s slaughter what we don’t want? How lazy, incompetent and heartless. I’m sick and tired of people making critical decisions regarding wildlife who are stupid and lazy.

  16. PROTECT THESE SHEEP!@!!!

  17. Shirley Lemieux says:

This situation is human terrorism against the animal kingdom. Many human beings like to justify their slaughter of animals by referring to them as “pests” or “invasive” etc but the reality is that these same humans are actually the “invasive” species who took over these animals home and land and would rather resort to killing them rather than to relocate or other means of saving their existence.

  18. Jaime+Perez says:

The sheep should be left alone to live in peace and safety. Humans need to stop killing the innocent animals!

  19. Raymond Stevens says:

Too bad we can’t “cull” the human asshholes that murder these beautiful animals.
