Stop Logging Industry From Destroying Last Old-Growth Forests

Target: John Horgan, Premier of British Columbia

Goal: Stop logging in vital old-growth forests that help build ecosystems and combat climate change.

Concerned environmentalists have banded together to protect the precious old-growth forests of Vancouver Island in Canada. Their efforts, made despite nearly 1,000 arrests and acts of alleged police brutality, mark the single biggest protest in Canadian history. This massive rescue operation cannot be in vain.

These trees could very well represent the last three percent of old-growth forests in all of British Columbia. The forests are especially revered because they reside on the grounds of the Pacheedaht First Nation indigenous people. To the environment, they are even more vital, harboring none of the ecological disadvantages of human disturbance. They also play key roles in providing habitats, promoting biodiversity, keeping nutrient cycles going strong, and purifying water. Perhaps most significantly, they act as powerful carbon sponges that can reduce dangerous pollution.

Sign the petition below to join the calls of protesters and indigenous tribes to preserve and protect these essential natural guardians.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Premier Horgan,

Canada has made significant commitments to reducing carbon emissions, yet this nation and particularly British Columbia are deactivating one of your most potent weapons: old-grown forests. These massive carbon absorbers are not just important to confronting the climate crisis. They also keep vital ecosystems functional and flourishing.

Protesters have made a strong commitment to Vancouver Island because they realize the crucial role of these forests…the last three percent of such forests remaining in British Columbia. This province cannot continue sacrificing its future for short-term gains. Please listen to concerned citizens and indigenous people who have understood the value of these lands for centuries.

Heed their calls to end destructive logging and pillaging of your last old-growth forests and your most consequential tool in safeguarding Canada’s natural heritage.

Sincerely,
