Target: Joe Biden, President of the United States
Goal: Condemn aggression and invasion threats directed at Taiwan from China.
Tensions over the country of Taiwan, which China views as its territory and property, are reaching a boiling point. China is becoming more aggressive in its posturing, delivering threats to any nation that supports Taiwanese independence. The nation recently threatened Lithuania because the region dared open an office under the Taiwanese name. In its most extreme rhetoric, the Chinese regime has promised an invasion of Taiwan if it senses a bid for independence is at hand.
The United States has received much of the ire from Chinese leaders. President Xi even reportedly warned President Biden in a virtual meeting recently: “whoever plays with fire gets burnt.” Such strong-arming led the U.S. to cut off official diplomatic relations with Taiwan decades ago and has compelled a mostly hands-off, neutral approach. If an invasion does ever occur, however, this un-American policy must end.
Sign the petition below to urge U.S. leaders to take a stand against China’s aggressive bullying tactics.
PETITION LETTER:
Dear President Biden,
From Hong Kong protests to alleged Xinjiang internment camps to the recent attack on Philippines boats, Chinese aggression has grown increasingly worrisome. Nowhere is this troubling trend more evident than in the nation’s actions toward Taiwan. Threats are becoming so frequent and inflammatory that Taiwanese leaders are reportedly building military capacity.
You recently affirmed that Taiwan has the right to “make up its own mind.” Please do not walk back these words because of political posturing. They embody American values and the belief in self-determination on which this country was built. Remain neutral during peace. Make it clear, however, that the U.S. has a “red line” as well.
If Chinese leaders ever choose invasion over peace, the United States must stand up for the oppressed and the disadvantaged.
Sincerely,
[Your Name Here]
