Success: Cameroon Releases Findings on Ethnic Massacre

Target: Paul Biya, President of Cameroon

Goal: Praise release of report vindicating accusations of deliberate murder of Cameroonian civilians.

The massacre of nearly two dozen civilians in northwestern Cameroon has been acknowledged in a government report, accepting guilt on the government’s behalf. This admission of guilt came as a result of efforts by human rights activists and those who signed this petition. The victims were members of the country’s English-speaking minority who had been targeted by Cameroonian Army troops and ethnic Fulani militias. Caught in the crossfire of a bloody ongoing war were more than a dozen children and one pregnant woman, none of whom were combatants or in any way a threat to the murderers.

The release of the report comes along with a promise to re-bury the dead with dignity, as well as to continue the investigation and to pay compensation to the victims’ families. Although more could always be done, this is a heartening development for human rights the world over. Sign the petition below to thank President Paul Biya for ordering the release of this report.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Biya,

The massacre of civilians in Ngarbuh was a tragic crime committed by forces loyal to you, deepening divisions between your government and the Anglophone minority you have oppressed. The release of the report admitting the guilt of government forces is a small step in the right direction toward correcting the wrongs suffered by English-speaking Cameroonians. Thank you for your decision to release this information.

Sincerely,
