Target: Mohammed Barkindo, Secretary General of OPEC
Goal: Support continued reduction of greenhouse gas-emitting oil supplies.
With all of the chaos and strain caused by global shutdowns, at least one silver lining in social distancing measures has emerged: a resurgence of the environment. Wildlife have reclaimed areas previously deemed off-limits. Once heavily polluted skies are now more pristine. Most recently, critical goals once dismissed as aspirational pipe dreams like the Green New Deal and other environmental protection efforts stand a fighting chance. As united voices such as those found in this ForceChange petition have long reinforced, gluttonous oil and gas production has fueled the destructive carbon emissions that put the planet on life support. A historic slash in oil production may soon give Earth the breathing room it desperately needs.
During 2020, global demand for oil has plummeted by over one-third. Many nations have already cut their daily oil production significantly as a result. The member nations of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) remained a key holdout. Now, however, the 13 countries of OPEC have agreed to diminish oil production by at least 10 percent, meaning millions of barrels of oil will not have the opportunity to pollute air, land, and water.
Sign this petition to thank OPEC for taking the right, responsible course of action.
PETITION LETTER:
Dear Mr. Barkindo,
Cutting oil production so significantly was not an easy decision, but it was ultimately the right decision. Economies have been devastated and jobs lost. The continued supply of a product with drastically lagging demand would only perpetuate these problems. Thank you for making a decision that will benefit the world and its citizens in the long-term.
Please continue to make informed, ethical decisions during this crisis and beyond.
Sincerely,
[Your Name Here]
