Success: Fisheries Held Accountable for Right Whale Deaths

Target: Jane Davenport, Senior attorney at Defenders of Wildlife

Goal: Thank those who sought justice and remedy for right whales killed due to entanglement in fishing nets.

Right whales may soon see some reprieve from the endangerments of the fishing industry, thanks to the Center for Biological Diversity, Defenders of Wildlife, and the Humane Society of the United States. A federal court ruled that the National Marine Fisheries Service failed to protect the species from death due to entanglement in fishing nets and a remedy is soon to follow. Thank those who fought hard for this justice.

“This decision sends a clear signal that federal officials must protect these desperately endangered animals from more painful and deadly entanglements before it’s too late,” stated Kristen Monsell, oceans legal director at the Center for Biological Diversity. She and other advocates, including those who signed this ForceChange petition, have been fighting against the fishing industry and demanding better protection for Right whales. From 2010 to 2016, entanglement accounted for 85% of right whale deaths for which the cause could be determined. Despite this, the fishing industry has continued to use equipment that is dangerous to this fragile species.

This landmark decision is a major conservation victory. Sign below and thank those who sought this justice and remedy.

Dear Ms. Davenport,

Your hard work and dedication to the conservation of Right whales has resulted in a landmark victory and I couldn’t be more grateful. The court has ruled that the National Marine Fisheries Service has failed to do all it can to protect Right whales, resulting in dozens of deaths and a continued threat of extinction. Now, thanks to your efforts, they will be forced to develop a plan to better protect Right whales and remedy their failings.

Thank you for taking a stand for this imperiled species and for your continued efforts in conservation law.
