Target: Ralph Northam, Governor of Virginia
Goal: Support background check expansion and red flag laws that curb gun violence.
United voices have finally drowned out the gun lobby in the south with the projected passing of common-sense gun reforms. Since over 30 people lost their lives in the Virginia Tech massacre of 2007, the fight to reduce gun violence has largely gone ignored by the state’s politicians. In this inexcusable period of indifference, an estimated 1,000-plus Virginians lose their lives annually to gun violence. Grieving families and advocates never gave up the call to action, however, as shown in this ForceChange petition.
A package of transformative gun control bills is making its way to a very supportive governor’s desk. In fact, Governor Ralph Northam affirmed that “these bills will save lives,” signaling his almost certain signature. The package—set to become the strongest gun violence prevention measures in the South—will implement common-sense reforms that not only a large percentage of Virginians, but also the majority of Americans support. These needed actions include a significant expansion of background checks to include private purchases, more stringent gun storage guidelines, and an enactment of red flag laws that would help keep firearms out of the hands of individuals who pose an imminent danger to themselves and others.
Sign this petition to thank the leaders who stood up to special interests and placed the people’s interests first.
PETITION LETTER:
Dear Governor Northam,
Your signature on the package of landmark gun violence prevention bills is a signature for life and for the silently ignored majority of Americans who want their leaders to prioritize them over special interests. The passage of these laws, along with the focus on legislation that values civil rights, demonstrates that Virginia’s new wave of lawmakers take their oath to the people who elected them seriously. Thank you for standing strong in the face of pressure from outside interests.
More importantly, thank you for supporting a long-needed effort that could save thousands of lives annually. Please keep up the fight.
Sincerely,
[Your Name Here]
