Success: Real Scientists Elected to Congress

Target: Kim Schrier, Newly Elected US Congressional Representative

Goal: Encourage new elected officials to fight alongside other scientists for science-based policy.

Eight candidates with science degrees, including newcomer and pediatrician Kim Schrier, have won major seats in Congress. The “blue wave” midterm elections are over. and not only have the Democrats won a majority in the House, but there are now actual members with scientific backgrounds in the House looking to promote science-based environmental policy. Scientists, the public, and petitions from our website have decried the debasement of scientific expertise in the current administration and demanded a return to evidence-based environmental and animal-supporting legislation.

After a two-year period in which environmental regulations have been defunded and anti-science climate change deniers have been elected to office, America now has a chance to reverse the damage done and regain a foothold against the destruction and exploitation of the environment. In particular, the Committee on Space, Science, and Technology will finally pass out of the hands of climate change-denying republicans and into the capable hands of scientific realists, according to Quartz news. There is still so much work ahead for our nation’s environmentalists, and it isn’t enough to just vote in people with scientific backgrounds. Now that they have been elected, it is time for scientist-politicians like Kim Schrier to keep their promises to the public and demand sensible environmental and climate change policy.

Please sign this petition to encourage Kim Schrier and our seven newly elected scientists to continue fighting for environmental justice in the US House of Representatives.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Congresswoman Elect Schrier,

In this historic midterm election, you were elected to the US House of Representatives. Your election represents not only one of the many Democratic victories, but also one of eight victories for candidates with science degrees. Your background as a pediatrician not only informs your compassionate stance on affordable health care but has also exposed you to the truth of scientific knowledge. Over the last two years, the current presidential administration has rejected scientifically minded policy and intentionally reduced the number of scientific experts in the Environmental Protection Agency.

Now that we have scientists in the legislative branch, you and your associates can fight for an informed future against the current administration’s policy of environmental deregulation and climate change denial. Notably, the House Committee on Space, Science, and Technology will likely switch over to Democratic control, wrenching it away from nearly two years of distinctly anti-evidence-based legislation. Please continue to work for legislation that protects the environment and ensure the survival of scientific literacy and belief in the US House of Representatives.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]

You’ll get the truth and facts from scientists, not career politicians and certainly not from the science doubting, environmental haters that are mostly on the Republican side of the aisle.
