Target: Ann Wagner, United States Representative for Missouri
Goal: Back law that tackles criminal online sex trafficking.
Human trafficking remains one of the most insidious crimes in countries spanning every corner of the globe, as calls to action such as this ForceChange petition and this petition demonstrate. With the increasing influence of technology, many exploiters have monetized their abusive practices tenfold on the Internet. The recently signed FOSTA anti-trafficking law, if utilized appropriately, has the potential to put a significant dent in brutal crimes that claim countless victims every year.
The Allow States and Victims to Fight Online Sex Trafficking Act targets websites whose primary activity involves online sexual solicitation, enacting guidelines that hold website operators to account for questionable postings while also enabling individuals adversely impacted by these websites to have their day in court. Although some worry that this new law will unfairly focus on consensual sex acts, such measures are vital to combat dangerous and destructive human trafficking that involves minors and/or individuals forced into these circumstances through coercion, intimidation, or captivity. Just a few days prior to the bill’s passage, for example, Backstage.com executives were charged with–among other crimes–reportedly facilitating the sale of teenagers for sexual acts.
Sign this petition to support a necessary step forward in the fight against involuntary sex trafficking and to encourage enforcement of laws against cruel abusers and their enablers.
PETITION LETTER:
Dear Representative Wagner,
The passage of your sponsored FOSTA anti-trafficking bill marks a significant step in bringing one of this nation’s most hidden atrocities out of the shadows. Sex traffickers do not discriminate, and their crimes can forever alter the lives of women, men, and children of every background.
The FOSTA law could help take away a powerful weapon for these criminals, who often navigate the digital highways without fear of retribution. If even one individual can be saved, then this law will have made a crucial difference.
Please help ensure this tool lives up to its potential and that its powers are not manipulated to decrease the safety and security of consenting adults. Continue being an ally, an advocate, and a voice for the voiceless.
Sincerely,
[Your Name Here]
