Success: House Passes Major Mental Health Reform Bill

Goal: Celebrate passing of sweeping mental health reform bill.

Mental health care will be receiving a sorely-needed upgrade thanks to a new measure passed in the House of Representatives. The Helping Families in Mental Health Crisis Act, which passed almost unanimously, is one of the most extensive reforms to the industry since  since 1963 and will help address a growing epidemic in the United States.

Among the act’s many benefits and provisions, thousands of new hospital beds will be made available for short-term hospital patients dealing with a mental illness. The bill also features revisions for the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), which works closely with many mentally ill patients.

Mental health care in America has long been in desperate need of an overhaul, as evidenced by this ForceChange petition, and this bill is an extremely encouraging step in the right direction.
