Success: Philadelphia Becomes First Major City to Implement Soda Tax

Target: Jim Kenney, Mayor of Philadelphia

Goal: Applaud new tax on soda and other sugary beverages.

Philadelphia became the first major U.S. city to place a tax on soda and other sugary beverages. A local council voted in favor of the measure, which will provide much-needed relief to schools and create a healthier city.

The taxation of sugary drinks has become a national talking point, as seen here in this ForceChange petition. City mayor Jim Kenney has pledged that an estimated $90 million will be generated in the next year, and this money will go directly towards the improvement of schools, community centers, and recreation centers. The tax is expected to generate $386 million over the next five years, meaning the city will have plenty of opportunities to help the community.

The tax is also expected to create a healthier city, as the higher prices may dissuade customers from purchasing the unhealthy beverages. Sign the petition below to thank the mayor for the implementation of this progressive measure.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Kenney,

I am writing to applaud your recent efforts in helping to implement a city-wide tax on soda and other sugary drinks. As obesity rates continue to skyrocket, our nation needs progressive solutions, and this new measure is extremely encouraging. By increasing the price of these unhealthy beverages, the city can hopefully encourage customers to pursue other, healthier options.

I would also like to commend the plan to use funds generated by the tax to improve the community. The tax is expected to generate hundreds of millions of dollars, most of which will be used to improve schools and community centers. I can only hope that other major cities across the country witness your progressive leadership and follow suit with taxes of their own.

Sincerely,
