Target: Jeff Rosen, District Attorney of Santa Clara County
Goal: Applaud removal of judge who issued insufficient sentence in rape case.
The judge who issued a controversial sentence in a sexual assault case has been removed from a similar case after a request from prosecutors. Aaron Persky has become notorious because of his decision to give an unusually lenient sentence to a convicted sex offender, and it seems that his unjust decision is already having consequences.
The Santa Clara County District Attorney used procedure 170.6, a process in which lawyers who feel that a judge is biased can request a new one to preside over the case.
Persky has come under fire after his decision to sentence former Stanford swimmer Brock Turner to just six months in county jail, despite Turner being convicted of sexually assaulting an unconscious woman. The decision sparked national outrage, as seen in this ForceChange petition.
Aaron Persky’s unfair sentence demonstrates that he is unfit to make rulings in similar cases. Sign the petition below to thank the DA for recognizing this judge’s incompetence.
Dear Mr. Rosen,
I am writing to commend your decision to remove Judge Aaron Persky from a sexual assault case. In a similar recent case, Persky sentenced Brock Turner to a measly six months in county jail, despite the fact that Turner was found guilty of sexually assaulting an unconscious woman.
Such a lenient sentence proves that Persky is unfit to preside over similar cases, and I applaud you for removing this man and preventing him from allowing more sex offenders to escape with a slap on the wrist.
