Success: Police Officer Charged for Fatally Shooting Unarmed Man

Target: Attorney General of the United States Loretta Lynch

Goal: Applaud indictment of police officer who killed an unarmed man and lied to cover it up.

A police officer has finally been indicted for his misconduct during a fatal traffic stop that led to the death of an unarmed man. A grand jury has charged Michael Slager, a former South Carolina police officer, with several counts after he gunned down Walter Scott as Scott was running away. The two major charges involve the use of a firearm in committing a crime of violence and obstruction of justice.

In his incident report, Slager claimed the shooting was in self-defense and that Scott was charging toward him while wielding a taser. A cell phone video of the incident, however, clearly shows Scott attempting to flee the scene when Slager fired his weapon. The unprovoked murder sparked outrage, as seen with this ForceChange petition.

Slager’s actions are inexcusable, and these charges are an encouraging sign that Walter Scott’s murder will not go unpunished. Sign the petition below to thank the Justice Department for holding this man accountable for his violent conduct.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mrs. Lynch,

I am writing to thank your department for its work in bringing federal charges against Michael Slager. Mr. Slager, a former South Carolina police officer, was involved in the fatal shooting of unarmed Walter Scott, and his misconduct throughout the legal process deserves punishment.

In his report, Slager attempted to claim that the killing was in self-defense, but a video of the incident clearly shows Scott attempting to flee the scene and a complete lack of danger for Slager. This needless killing, coupled with the attempts to cover it up, must not go unpunished, and I applaud your department for bringing this man to justice.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]
