Target: Jim McDonnell, Los Angeles County Sheriff
Goal: Applaud resignation of police chief of staff guilty of making racist and sexist comments.
One of the most senior officials in the nation’s largest sheriff’s office has resigned after sending numerous racist and sexist messages from his work account. Tom Angel of the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department came under fire after a number of emails were released containing derogatory remarks directed towards Muslims, blacks, Mexicans, and women.
One excerpt from the emails reads, “I took my biology exam last Friday… I was asked to name two things commonly found in cells. Apparently ‘Blacks’ and ‘Mexicans’ were NOT the correct answers.” At a time when tensions between police and minorities is at an all-time high, Angel’s remarks come across as extremely insensitive and offensive.
Backlash against Angel was almost instantaneous, as evidenced by the petition seen here on ForceChange. Angel’s resignation proves that the L.A. Sheriff’s Department is committed to eliminating racism and sexism in its ranks. Sign the petition below to thank the department for their swift and fair actions.
PETITION LETTER:
Dear Mr. McDonnell,
I am writing to commend the recent resignation of Tom Angel, the official guilty of sending a number of racist and sexist emails from his work account. At a time when tensions between police and minorities is at an all-time high, Angel’s remarks were extremely insensitive and offensive, and such a person does not deserve to represent the city of Los Angeles.
By ending Angel’s tenure with the department, your office has demonstrated a clear commitment to eliminating racism and sexism in your ranks. I applaud this resignation, and sincerely hope that your office will continue to crack down on other instances of racism in the future.
Sincerely,
[Your Name Here]
