Success: Beautiful California Desert Saved

Target: President Barack Obama

Goal: Thank President Obama for protecting 1.8 millions acres of California’s desert from industrial buildup.

President Obama has designated three new national monuments that will protect 1.8 million acres of California’s natural desert. ForceChange and other activists urged President Obama to save these important ecosystems from industrial development and he listened. Now the Mojave Trails, Castle Mountains, and the Sand to Snow National Monuments will be preserved for future generations to enjoy. Let’s thank President Obama for standing up to developers and saving California’s desert.

For years, developers have looked at California’s desert as an opportune area for metropolitan expansion. Locals and environmentalists have fought to stop this expansion, claiming that it would ruin gorgeous landscapes and take away needed habitat for native species.

These new monuments will connect other already protected lands and provide passageways for big horn sheep to travel safely. Rising temperatures have forced these animals to look for more habitable lands. The White House believes the new monuments will help fortify the desert against climate change, helping this at-risk species even more.

By encouraging President Obama to protect these lands, we have almost doubled the amount of acres the President had previously protected. The new monuments are also expected to bring funding to the National Park Service to study wildlife and plant species.

Besides protecting animals and the environment, we have also safeguarded ancient Native American trading routes and the longest undeveloped stretch of Route 66. This was an important win for the future preservation of California. Thank President Obama for protecting California’s desert for future generations.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear President Obama,

Thank you for taking action to protect California’s desert by declaring three new national monuments. The areas you have protected are needed habitats for at-risk animals like the big horn sheep. You have shown that the White House values important ecosystems more than urban expansion.

I applaud you and your team for conserving the treasured landscapes of Mojave Trails, Castle Mountains, and the Sand to Snow National Monument.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]
