Success: New Jersey Creating Rising Sea Level Awareness Programs

Target: Jeanne Herb, Associate Director Environmental Analysis & Communications Group

Goal: Applaud the creation of New Jersey rising sea level awareness programs.

Global warming is changing sea levels and the Jersey shore looks to be the modern day Atlantis in the years to come. The state of New Jersey has taken action by creating groups such as the Climate Adaptation Alliance to prepare for the reality of rising sea levels. The Jersey Shore, as most of us know it, will be prepared for the changes thanks to petitions like Stop Global Warming Before It’s Too Late. The Alliance has taken steps to prepare for the changes by surveying shoreline areas, creating recommendations through collaboration with policy makers and conducting workshops for decision makers.

Professor Harold Wanless, chair of the Geological Science Department at Miami University, recently warned shore communities about what to prepare for in the upcoming years. “As sea level rises further, communities need to really start looking at this and start planning so they can know at what point they have to raise the roads,” said Wanless.

Wanless and the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) recognize the rising sea levels as a result of burning fossil fuels and an irreversible action that must be dealt with immediately. The main concern for the Climate Adaptation Alliance is figuring out what the best steps are to ensure the security of New Jerseyans.

The New Jersey DEP has helped raise awareness by implementing the Climate Adaptation Alliance. The Alliance focuses on preparing key impacted areas for the change to come. Join me in thanking the Alliance for taking measures into their own hands and ask yourself how you can lend a hand.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Jeanne Herb,

New Jersey shore’s survival relies on its ability to adjust, change and adapt to environmental changes. The early discovery of rising sea levels is a sign that the people of New Jersey do not have as much time to act.

As new discoveries surface, so does the importance of groups such as the Climate Adaptation Alliance. I thank you and the Alliance for urgently preparing for the inevitable impact from global warming. Please continue to take future environmental challenges with urgency to ensure the survival of New Jerseyans.

Sincerely,
