Don’t Kill Federally Protected Gray Wolves

Target: Douglas Burgum, U.S. Secretary of the Interior

Goal: Stop the proposed killing of federally protected gray wolves that threatens ecological balance and undermines effective non-lethal management solutions.

Recent discussions by President Donald Trump’s administration regarding the potential to allow farmers and ranchers to lethally manage federally protected gray wolves have raised significant concerns among wildlife advocates and researchers. The administration’s intent to prioritize ranching interests severely undermines the protections that grey wolves have under the Endangered Species Act, despite evidence suggesting that lethal methods do not effectively protect livestock. The alarming prospect of reinstating wolf culling undermines not only the recovery efforts for these apex predators but also risks disrupting the delicate ecosystems they inhabit.

Evidence suggests that the threat wolves pose to livestock is minimal at most. Reports indicate that wolves are responsible for merely 0.2% of total cattle deaths in Oregon, and less than 1% in California, with the majority of livestock losses attributable to non-predatory causes such as disease. The administration’s approach falls flat in addressing evidence-based solutions for mitigating human-wolf conflicts, particularly when non-lethal alternatives have proven more effective in reducing predation. The emphasis on lethal removal could backfire, leading to increased livestock losses and negatively impacting ecological health.

Immediate action is necessary to halt the proposed measures that would jeopardize wolf populations. The demand is clear: stop the administration’s push for lethal management of gray wolves and prioritize investment in non-lethal solutions that support both ranchers and wildlife. Such a shift would reflect a commitment to ecological balance and responsible wildlife management practices.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Secretary Burgum,

It has come to the attention of concerned citizens that there is a renewed push within the Trump administration to permit the lethal management of federally protected gray wolves. This alarming proposal caters to ranchers while largely ignoring the substantial evidence that killing wolves is not an effective method for protecting livestock. Studies have shown that wolves contribute to a minuscule percentage of livestock losses, with non-predatory causes accounting for the majority.

Previous efforts to delist gray wolves have been founded on insufficient data and ultimately reversed by judicial decisions grounded in ecological science. The belief that lethal removal will alleviate ranching challenges is unfounded and could exacerbate the issue, as alternative predators may fill the ecological void left by slain wolves. The better path forward involves prioritizing research, education, and investment in non-lethal predator management strategies that have proven successful in mitigating human-wolf conflicts without compromising ecological integrity.

We urge you to stand against the proposed culling of gray wolves and instead advocate for non-lethal solutions. Safeguarding our ecosystems and the species that inhabit them is a responsibility that must be upheld. Please take action to halt this reckless policy and enforce protections that ensure the long-term recovery of gray wolves.

Sincerely,
