Target: Congresswoman Ashley Hinson
Goal: Demand appropriate repercussions for supporting the Save Our Bacon Act, which threatens animal welfare standards and undermines state rights.
Iowa voters have expressed significant concern over the Save Our Bacon Act, sponsored by Republican Congresswoman Ashley Hinson, (IA-02) which aims to undermine state animal welfare laws that ensure animals, particularly hogs, are treated humanely on farms. The legislation promotes the continued use of gestation crates, which confine pigs to such extreme conditions that they are unable to move freely, turn around, or lie down comfortably. With a staggering 45% of surveyed voters opposing this act and many expressing their wish for stronger animal welfare protections, the overwhelming sentiment in Iowa is in favor of humane animal treatment, not corporate welfare.
The legislation poses a threat not only to animal welfare but also to the autonomy of states like Iowa, where voters believe they should have the authority to establish their own agricultural standards. A recent poll highlights that a significant majority—74%—of Iowans support the ability of states to set their own agriculture laws, reinforcing the demand for safeguarding animal rights. Furthermore, over 700 veterinarians have commented on the potential public health risks associated with these agricultural practices and called for Congress to reject the inclusion of provisions supporting the Save Our Bacon Act.
Members of Congress should not be working to strip their own states of the right to set animal welfare standards. Demand Congresswoman Hinson drop her support for the Save Our Bacon Act.
PETITION LETTER:
Dear Congresswoman Hinson,
The ongoing debate surrounding the Save Our Bacon Act has revealed alarming trends in animal welfare and state rights. Recent polls indicate that a majority of Iowans are against efforts to weaken existing animal welfare laws, with many expressing their deep concern over the use of gestation crates that confine pigs in inhumane conditions. As representatives of the people, it is unacceptable for lawmakers to support measures that threaten the welfare of animals and dismiss the overwhelming public sentiment that demands humane treatment of livestock.
It has come to light that this legislation not only undermines humane animal care practices but also disrespects the rights of states to establish their own agriculture standards. A significant number of voters believe strongly that Iowa should retain the authority to govern agricultural practices within its jurisdiction, and this is echoed by a substantial group of veterinarians who have voiced opposition to practices promoted by the Save Our Bacon Act. The public clearly stands against such harmful legislation, and their voices should not be ignored.
We call on you to drop your support of the Save Our Bacon Act now.
Sincerely,
