End Cruel, Deadly Forced Swim Tests

Target: Martin Makary, Director of the FDA

Goal: Stop the cruel forced swim test from being used in research.

The forced swim test, a widely discredited experiment, has subjected countless small animals, including mice and rats, to horrifying conditions that involve drowning them in inescapable containers of water. These animals are forced to swim frantically, desperate to avoid drowning, leading to undue stress and suffering. The experiment allegedly measures “depression” based on the non-scientific assumption that when the animals cease swimming and begin to float, they are demonstrating signs of hopelessness. This practice is not only distressing for the animals but has also been criticized for its lack of scientific validity, rendering it obsolete in contemporary research.

Recent reports indicate a significant global shift, with numerous organizations and institutions abandoning the forced swim test due to its cruelty and ineffectiveness. For instance, authorities in Germany, Ireland, the United Kingdom, India, Australia, and Latin America have begun to implement bans on this test after PETA’s outreach and advocacy efforts. However, despite these advances, there are still organizations that continue to employ this brutal method, putting the lives of many animals at risk. It is crucial that these practices be not only halted but that those who persist in using the forced swim test be held accountable for these unethical actions.

Demanding the complete eradication of the forced swim test is essential not only for animal welfare but also for the advancement of ethical scientific practices that prioritize humane methodologies. It is imperative that punitive measures be taken against any individuals or organizations involved in perpetrating this outdated and inhumane practice. The time for change is now — it’s critical that actions are taken to stop this cruelty and instill accountability where necessary.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Director Makary,

The forced swim test, used to assess depression in small animals, has subjected countless creatures to unbearable suffering and has no scientifically reliable basis. These animals are trapped in inescapable containers and forced to swim for their lives, creating panic and distress, and the assumption that their immobility signifies despair is both unfounded and cruel. The suffering inflicted upon these sentient beings is unacceptable and calls for immediate action.

Numerous credible institutions around the world have ceased using this barbaric method, highlighting a significant shift towards humane research practices. Countries such as Germany, Ireland, and the United Kingdom have recognized the test’s lack of validity and have enacted bans. Despite these advancements, there are still facilities that allegedly continue to employ this test, putting animal welfare in jeopardy. Those who persist in utilizing the forced swim test must face appropriate consequences for their actions.

It is imperative to take immediate steps to ensure the complete elimination of the forced swim test from research practices. Furthermore, it is essential to implement measures to hold accountable those organizations and individuals still allegedly involved in this cruel experimentation. The welfare of these animals and the integrity of scientific research depend on swift and decisive action.

Sincerely,
