End Cruel Animal Testing for Sunscreens and Toothpastes

Target: Kyle Diamantas, Acting Commissioner of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration

Goal: Halt outdated animal testing for everyday products and fully embrace modern, non-animal testing methods.

Recent advancements in the European Union towards phasing out animal testing for chemical safety assessments highlight a stark contrast to practices still prevalent in the United States. While the European Commission has set forth a comprehensive roadmap to replace animal testing with reliable non-animal methods, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration continues to permit cruel and outdated testing on animals for products like sunscreens and toothpastes. Reports indicate that this reliance on animal testing leads to unnecessary suffering for countless animals, including forcing substances into their bodies without any real scientific benefit.

The roadmap emerging from the EU commits to stopping the poisoning of fish in lethal toxicity tests, force-feeding pregnant rabbits, and subjecting rats to inhalation of chemicals. However, in stark contrast, the FDA has remained resistant to adopting these humane, modern alternatives despite their availability and proven effectiveness. This persistence in allowing animal testing not only perpetuates cruelty but also squanders valuable resources on methods that do not reflect modern scientific understanding.

The time for change in the United States is now. The suffering of animals subjected to ineffective and outdated testing must cease. There is a pressing need for the FDA to follow the example set by the European Commission and act decisively in favor of non-animal testing for the good of both animals and public health. The demand is clear: end outdated animal testing and fully embrace scientifically sound, humane alternatives.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Acting Commissioner Diamantas,

The ongoing practice of animal testing for routine consumer products such as sunscreens and toothpastes is not only ethically troubling but also scientifically outdated. As highlighted by recent initiatives in the European Union, there exists a clear shift towards modern, humane alternatives that are both reliable and effective in assessing chemical safety. The continued allowance of animal testing here in the U.S. is a stark contradiction to this progressive movement and must come to an end.

As reports indicate, animals are subjected to intense suffering, forced-fed harmful substances, and are often used in cruel tests that do not contribute meaningfully to human safety. The suffering of these animals is compounded by the inefficiency of these outdated methods that clearly do not reflect current scientific advancements. By maintaining a system that endorses animal testing, the FDA not only neglects the welfare of these sentient beings but also disregards the potential for innovative non-animal testing methods that can yield more relevant results for human health.

It is imperative for the FDA to stop permitting these inhumane practices and to adopt a clear commitment to modernizing testing regulations in favor of animal-free alternatives. The evidence is overwhelming, and the time for action is now. End the reliance on outdated animal tests and commit to transitioning to non-animal testing methods.

Sincerely,
