End Solitary Confinement and Cruel Circuses for Elephants Suffering Severe Health Issues and Emotional Trauma

Target: Director of the European Wildlife Agency
Goal: Ensure adequate measures and strong penalties for entities that continue to exploit elephants in captivity.

The plight of elephants living in captivity is disturbing and unacceptable. Reports indicate that 36 elephants are reportedly confined in solitary conditions across European zoos, with approximately 40 still forced to perform in circuses. Many of these elephants, including Kariba and Julie, have experienced years of confinement, which severely restricts their natural behaviors and social interactions, leaving them particularly vulnerable to health issues and emotional trauma. It is imperative that those responsible for their captivity face serious consequences.

The conditions these elephants endure are heartbreaking. They are confined to environments that fail to meet their complex needs, suffering from diseases and physical impairments as a result. Studies have shown that elephants in captivity often have a drastically reduced life expectancy, with one study revealing that African females live an average of only 17 years in captivity compared to 56 years in the wild. The mortality rate of captive-born elephants in North America and the EU is alarmingly high, further underscoring the urgent need for reform and oversight.

Immediate action is required to end the exploitation of these magnificent creatures. It is essential that penalties are enforced against zoos and circuses that continue to keep elephants in unsuitable and inhumane conditions. The well-being of these animals must be prioritized, and strong measures should be taken to ensure that no elephants fall victim to the cruel practices of captivity. This petition demands that effective legislation and enforcement be implemented to protect captive elephants and hold accountable those who choose to disregard their welfare.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Director of the European Wildlife Agency,

The situation facing elephants in captivity across Europe is dire and requires immediate action. Reports indicate that 36 elephants are currently living in isolation in zoos and approximately 40 are still performing in circuses. Kariba and Julie, two elephants who have experienced years of confinement, exemplify the suffering these intelligent and sentient beings endure when deprived of their natural habitats and social structures. These circumstances cannot continue unchecked.

The inhumane conditions these elephants face are unacceptable. Studies have shown that elephants in zoos and circuses suffer from severe health complications, including diseases and lameness resulting from restricted movement and social isolation. Statistics reveal that captive African females live only 17 years on average versus 56 years in the wild, and the mortality rate of captive-born Asian elephants is surviving under alarming conditions. It is clear that the current legislation surrounding the care of these animals is insufficient and poorly enforced.

It is crucial that the European Wildlife Agency takes a strong stance against the exploitation of elephants. Strong penalties and reforms must be enforced for institutions that continue to keep these majestic animals in conditions that deny them their basic needs. The time to act is now to ensure the welfare of elephants struggling in captivity, and to set a precedent that prioritizes their rights and humane treatment.

Sincerely,
