Stop Alleged Rubber-Stamping of University’s Animal Experiments

Target: Jayanta Bhattacharya, Director, National Institutes of Health

Goal: Hold the University of Washington accountable for allegedly stacking its animal care committee with industry insiders, leading to the suffering and death of thousands of animals.

It has been reported that thousands of animals faced unimaginable pain and death at the University of Washington (UW) due to the improper composition of its Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee. For years, this committee, which is supposed to protect animals from unethical treatment, was allegedly filled with experimentation industry insiders in violation of federal laws. This raises grave concerns about the welfare of countless animals used in experiments, as decisions made by this committee led to the approval of around 1,500 experiments that allegedly harmed vulnerable creatures.

Documents obtained through prolonged legal action by PETA suggest that from 2020 to 2025, the committee’s failures to adhere to established federal standards not only jeopardized animal lives but also undermined the integrity of scientific research. The accusations suggest the committee’s oversight was merely a formality, diluting the effectiveness of animal welfare protections intended to prevent unnecessary suffering. This leaves a haunting question: how many innocent lives were lost or irreparably harmed due to blatant disregard for ethical guidelines?

This situation demands immediate intervention to ensure accountability and restore trust in animal research. The National Institutes of Health must take stringent action to rectify these reported violations. UW should be compelled to return millions of federal grant dollars received during the time its committee was allegedly mismanaged. Beyond rectifying past wrongs, enforcing strong oversight for all animal care committees is necessary to prevent future abuses and protect both animal welfare and scientific integrity.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Dr. Bhattacharya,

Recent disturbing allegations regarding the University of Washington’s (UW) Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee require urgent attention and action. It has been reported that this committee was improperly stacked with individuals from the experimentation industry, violating federal laws designed to protect animals from harm. It is alleged that this misalignment of interests allowed for the approval of approximately 1,500 experiments that subjected thousands of animals to pain, fear, and even death. If true, this undermines both ethical standards and the scientific credibility of federally funded research.

The continued funding of UW and its possible retention of NIH grants during this period of alleged mismanagement raises serious concerns about accountability and the safeguarding of animal welfare. If proper oversight is not enforced, the welfare of countless animals remains at risk, along with the integrity of scientific findings that depend on rigorous ethical protocols.

We urge the NIH to take decisive action against the University of Washington for its alleged gross misconduct and improperly constituted committee. This includes the recovery of federal funds utilized during these years of alleged unethical oversight and a thorough investigation to ensure compliance with animal welfare laws. It is time to restore integrity to animal research and ensure that it is conducted with the respect and care that all living beings deserve.

Sincerely,
