After being left in Stevens’ care, Natasha was reportedly found in a horrific state, weighing a mere 63 pounds with numerous health issues, including a shrinking heart due to severe dehydration, blockages in her digestive system, and severe infections. The local animal rescue manager described this as “the worst animal abuse case” she has ever encountered. The reported disturbing and shocking details of Natasha’s suffering, compounded by Stevens’ apparent failure to seek veterinary care despite knowledge of the dog’s deteriorating condition, paint a grim picture.
Further investigation suggested that Stevens openly expressed her disinterest in caring for the dog, stating, “I am not taking care of that dog. I didn’t want it and I’m not taking care of it.” A public record search indicates that Stevens had a previous role as a corrections officer, raising questions about her ability to care for a vulnerable animal. Reports indicate Natasha’s suffering has resulted in mounting veterinary bills, now exceeding $17,000, to provide her with the necessary medical treatment and rehabilitation.
The community must unite to ensure that those who commit such heinous acts face appropriate punishment. It is imperative that the Cumberland County District Attorney prosecutes the charges against Stevens to the fullest extent of the law, including aggravated cruelty and neglect of animals.
