End Animal Suffering by Prioritizing Plant-Based Proteins

Target: Brooke Rollins, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture

Goal: Promote and support plant-based protein alternatives to mitigate animal suffering and environmental harm.

The conversation surrounding nutrition in the U.S. has recently favored animal-based protein, neglecting the compelling evidence of its detrimental effects on health, animal welfare, and the environment. A significant portion of the population remains unaware that plant-based proteins can meet and even exceed dietary needs without contributing to cruelty against animals or increasing the carbon footprint associated with meat consumption. It is crucial that those in positions of authority recognize the urgent necessity for a shift in focus towards plant-based diets, which are supported by scientific research and offer sustainable solutions to ongoing health crises and environmental concerns.

Evidence indicates that plant-based foods such as legumes, whole grains, nuts, and seeds not only provide ample protein but also promote better overall health. For example, lentils and edamame deliver high protein content along with added benefits like increased heart health and stable blood sugar levels. Additionally, the promotion of processed high-protein vegan meats is a gateway to reducing dependence on animal products while still appealing to those accustomed to traditional meat flavors. However, despite the availability and benefits of these plant-based alternatives, regulatory support to enhance their visibility, accessibility, and acceptance remains insufficient.

A move toward enforcing regulations that prioritize plant-based protein options is more than just a dietary preference; it is a necessary step towards ending animal suffering and combating climate change. By supporting a food system that emphasizes plant-based nutrition, harmful practices in the meat industry can be mitigated, leading to a compassionate and sustainable future.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Secretary Rollins,

In light of recent discussions regarding protein sources in the U.S., it is vital to address the ongoing harm caused by promoting animal-based protein over plant-based options. Reports indicate that the majority of adults can efficiently meet their protein needs through plants alone, while also minimizing the environmental impact associated with traditional meat production. The evidence supporting plant-based nutrition is compelling, showcasing its ability to promote health, reduce animal suffering, and lower carbon emissions. Unfortunately, this information is not adequately reflected in current dietary recommendations and food policies.

Plant-based foods like lentils, chickpeas, and quinoa are not only sufficient in protein but also contribute significantly to heart health, gastrointestinal well-being, and overall nutritional balance. In addition, plant-based alternatives to meat are gaining traction, with products like the Beyond Burger and JUST Egg offering a familiar taste experience without the ethical and ecological costs of animal farming. This shift is critical for fostering a more compassionate food system, yet regulatory support remains alarmingly lacking.

We urge you to take immediate action to enforce regulations that promote plant-based protein alternatives. Establishing supportive frameworks for plant-based foods will not only foster a healthier population but also protect animals and the environment for future generations. The time for change is now.

Sincerely,
