Don’t Let Major Companies Backtrack on Animal Welfare Pledges

Target: U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins

Goal: Demand appropriate action and accountability for companies that allegedly continue to engage in cruel factory farming practices despite animal welfare policies.

The continuing prevalence of factory farming is linked to extensive animal suffering and environmental degradation, a reality that weighs heavily on the conscience of society. Reports suggest that many companies, although making pledges to improve animal welfare, may still be falling short in their commitments, creating a dissonance between public promises and private practices. Despite advancements in transparency and animal welfare standards, there are still significant numbers of animals subjected to inhumane conditions that do not meet the expectations set by these companies.

Tens of thousands of animals remain caged, overcrowded, and treated in ways that do not allow them to express natural behaviors. For example, as highlighted by recent advocacy efforts, brands like Aldi Süd and REWE Group have committed to cage-free eggs for hens but reportedly still partake in practices that neglect the wellbeing of other farm animals. The discrepancies in these companies’ implemented practices versus their stated policies appear to stem from insufficient enforcement and oversight measures in place to ensure accountability.

Demanding robust regulation and meaningful consequences for non-compliance with animal welfare commitments is imperative to drive genuine change in the food industry. It is time for decisive action to secure the protection of animals within agricultural systems.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Secretary Rollins,

Despite progress in establishing animal welfare standards, many companies allegedly continue to engage in practices that result in considerable suffering for countless farm animals. It appears that even as leading companies tout commitments to humane treatment, there is a significant gap between these promises and the grim reality facing animals in factory farming.

While companies like Aldi Süd and REWE Group have made strides toward cage-free egg policies, there remains widespread concern about the treatment of chickens and other animals in their supply chains. Allegations of overcrowding, lack of proper veterinary care, and cruel slaughter methods continue to pervade the industry, raising critical questions about the enforcement of animal welfare regulations.

We urge you to take immediate and effective action to hold companies accountable for failing to uphold their commitments to animal welfare. It is crucial to ensure that robust oversight and enforcement mechanisms are established to protect animals from suffering and to bring transparency to food production. Stronger regulations and accountability measures are necessary to foster an agricultural system that respects the lives of all sentient beings.

Sincerely,
