Don’t Punish Activist for Rescuing Chickens From Certain Cruel Death at Processing Plant

Target: Carla Rodriguez, District Attorney of Sonoma County, CA

Goal: Don’t prosecute animal activists for protecting chickens from a cruel fate in factory farms.

The recent case against Zoe Rosenberg, a 23-year-old animal rights activist, brings to light disturbing allegiances that prioritize the interests of a multibillion-dollar corporation over the compassionate treatment of vulnerable animals. Rosenberg allegedly took four chickens from a processing plant in Petaluma, California, believing she was rescuing them from a cruel and inhumane existence. The actions of the Sonoma County prosecutors, who spent over six weeks and hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars on a case that defends corporate interests at the expense of animal welfare, must not go unchallenged.

Reportedly, Rosenberg and fellow members of Direct Action Everywhere infiltrated Petaluma Poultry, a supplier for Perdue Farms, to save these chickens during a midnight operation. Their motives were driven by a commitment to animal rights, and footage was released showing the horrific conditions faced by thousands of chickens crammed into crates awaiting slaughter. Despite the clear circumstances surrounding Rosenberg’s actions, prosecutors maintained that legality superseded compassion as they pursued several charges against her. This approach echoes a troubling pattern of prioritizing corporate profit margins over ethical considerations regarding animal treatment.

Justice for animals should not require risking imprisonment for those protecting them from harm. Call on authorities to drop charges against Zoe Rosenberg.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear DA Rodriguez,

The prosecution of Zoe Rosenberg for her alleged attempt to rescue four chickens from a processing plant raises significant ethical concerns regarding the treatment of animals and the use of taxpayer funds. Ms. Rosenberg, an activist with Direct Action Everywhere, was motivated by compassion when she allegedly took these chickens from Petaluma Poultry, believing she was saving them from a life of suffering and slaughter. The actions taken against her seem to unjustly uphold the economic interests of a large corporation at the expense of a humane cause.

It is alarming that Sonoma County has expended vast resources in pursuit of legal action against Ms. Rosenberg for her efforts to protect vulnerable animals, with taxpayer dollars being used to defend corporate cruelty while neglecting the welfare of the animals involved. This case exemplifies how the legal system should not be utilized to stifle activism focused on ethical treatment and rescue of animals.

We urge you to reconsider the charges against Zoe Rosenberg and to address the imbalanced focus of prosecutorial resources when it comes to animal advocacy. Justice must be served not only for corporations but also for the voiceless animals suffering in cruel conditions. It is imperative to shift the narrative and allow those who act in defense of animal rights to do so without fear of disproportionate legal repercussions.

Sincerely,
