Target: The Right Honorable Thérèse Coffey, Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs
Goal: Ban the boiling of lobsters and crabs and enforce legal protections for these sentient animals.
Boiling lobsters and crabs alive continues to be a routine practice, despite emerging evidence that these creatures feel pain. A group of scientists in the U.K. has called for a ban on this disturbing method of killing, citing the need to prevent “avoidable suffering” as recognized under the U.K.’s Welfare of Animals at the Time of Killing (WATOK) law. This raises the question: how many more studies are necessary to affirm what many already know? Crustaceans, including lobsters, are sentient beings capable of experiencing distress and suffering.
The shocking reality is that crustaceans continue to be subjected to cruel experiments, purportedly to prove they feel pain, despite prior studies corroborating this fact. The very creatures being evaluated for their capacity to suffer are then subjected to the same acts science is attempting to mitigate—such as being boiled alive. This method inflicts extreme suffering on lobsters and crabs, who may endure considerable pain during the process. This neglect of their welfare stands in direct violation of the legal principles that underpin animal protection in the U.K.
The time to act is now. Stronger legal measures are necessary to safeguard these sentient beings from needless suffering. By banning the boiling of lobsters and crabs once and for all, we can align our practices with the scientific consensus while eliminating the need for even more painful experiments. Demand that the U.K. government take action to end this cruel practice and establish strict protections for these animals.
PETITION LETTER:
Dear Secretary Coffey,
The recent outcry from scientists urging a ban on the boiling of lobsters and crabs emphasizes an urgent need for reform in animal welfare policy. Overwhelming evidence suggests these animals are capable of experiencing pain and suffering. This indicates a significant moral failing in the way we treat these sentient beings, which is in direct contravention of the Welfare of Animals at the Time of Killing (WATOK) regulations.
It is particularly distressing that, instead of ceasing the cruel treatment of lobsters and crabs, these animals have been subjected to painful experiments in an effort to once again prove their capacity for pain and suffering. While a growing body of evidence corroborates that they indeed feel distress, the continuation of inhumane practices is deeply troubling. Reports highlight that lobsters, under conditions like confinement, low oxygen, and crowding, can face extreme suffering, potentially exceeding what humans might endure in similar circumstances. This is not only ethically indefensible but also reflects poorly on our societal values concerning the treatment of all beings.
We urge you to take immediate steps to ban the boiling of lobsters and crabs and enforce measures that protect these animals from such cruelty. Progress in upholding ethical standards regarding animal welfare is long overdue, and the demand for compassion in our treatment of sentient beings must be met with the urgency it deserves. Please act to ensure that laws reflect the ethical responsibility we hold to prevent unnecessary suffering in all animals.
Sincerely,
