Ban fireworks in Mauritius

Target: Prime minister, Pravin Jugnauth, Mauritius,

As an animal lover, I have witnessed first-hand the distress and harm that fireworks can cause to our beloved pets and wildlife in Mauritius. The loud noises and bright flashes of light are not only terrifying for them, but can also lead to severe injuries and even death. A large number of birds perish on the night of the fireworks. The loud noise, bright light and fumes cause scare them, they try to escape , they can’t see in the dark, they become disorientated, they fall or get knocked about and die. Cats, dogs and all animals get petrified, when they try to run away, they get lost and even have accidents and die.

Fireworks are not just harmful to animals. They also pose a significant risk to human safety, with numerous cases of burns and other injuries reported each year. According to a study by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), fireworks start an average of 18,500 fires per year worldwide.

Moreover, they contribute significantly to air pollution. A study published in Atmospheric Environment found that levels of particulate matter – tiny toxic particles which can penetrate deep into our lungs – increased by 42% on days when fireworks were let off.

Given these facts, it is clear that the use of fireworks needs stricter regulation or outright banning in Mauritius for the sake of both animal welfare and public health.

Please help me in urging our government officials to enact legislation banning the use of fireworks across our beautiful island nation.

The petition will raise awareness and sensitive people about the suffering caused by fireworks.
