Success: European Union Halts Greenwashing

Target: David Sassoli, President of the European Parliament

Goal: Praise new rules distinguishing gas and oil as unsustainable fuels.

The European Parliament reached an agreement that will ensure a greener future, free from fossil fuels. This agreement will prevent greenwashing and uphold transparency in green energy by describing natural gas and nuclear energy as ‘transitional’ sources of energy. This marks a great success for environmentalists, the people of Europe, and those who signed this petition.

Lawmakers and member states of the European Union had come to an impasse over finance rules for green investment, with one side, backed heavily by fossil fuel lobbyists, arguing for the inclusion of natural gas and petroleum products as green, sustainable fuels. This would have amounted to greenwashing, the intentional mislabeling of products as less sustainable or environmentally sound than they are.

However, a compromise was reached in Brussels which allowed for the financing and funding of gas and nuclear projects so long as they are labelled clearly as such and dedicated to temporary use, in order to wean Europe off the massive petroleum consumption that characterizes the world today. New rules introduced under this compromise will grade infrastructure and energy projects by their impact and sustainability, and will help ensure that any new gas or oil projects will be phased out in favor of healthier, more sustainable options as soon as possible.

Please sign below to thank the President of the European Parliament and EU member states for this historic compromise and to encourage them to continue working to build a cleaner, healthier Europe for future generations.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Sassoli,

The agreement on fair and honest rules for the labeling of fuel sources in Europe is a significant victory, allowing financiers and governments to be honest, be held accountable, and make progress toward a completely green future. Labeling natural gas, oil, and, to a lesser extent, nuclear power as green would have been a betrayal of the many hopeful activists and leaders working tirelessly to ensure honesty and eco-friendliness in our way of life and our future.

We congratulate you and your colleagues for the grace and honesty which you have shown in reaching this admirable compromise, and we urge you to continue to establish rules and practices which will protect transparency, discourage pollution, and reward green initiatives in the years to come.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]
