Stop Poisoning Thousands of Animals for Cosmetic Testing

Target: Marty Makary, U.S. Food and Drug Administration Director

Goal: End the use of animal testing in cosmetics and implement enforcement of cruelty-free standards.

Every year, countless rabbits, mice, and dogs suffer horrific fates due to cruel and outdated testing methods mandated by cosmetic companies seeking to launch new products. These animals are burned, poisoned, or blinded in laboratories, only to be discarded when deemed “no longer useful.” This disturbing practice continues despite the existence of safe and effective non-animal testing alternatives, calling into question the ethics of continuing such brutality for mere cosmetic gains.

The Humane Society International reports that over 500,000 animals are subjected to cosmetic testing globally each year. Many popular makeup brands still rely on these methods even while branding themselves as “clean” or “responsible.” Consumers unknowingly support this cycle of suffering each time they purchase products from these companies, failing to recognize the cruelty that takes place behind closed doors. The widespread reliance on animal testing is not only archaic but also entirely unnecessary.

Immediate action is required to end this inhumane practice and protect the innocent animals caught in it. It is imperative that the cosmetics industry moves towards cruelty-free standards that do not necessitate the suffering of sentient beings. By eliminating animal testing, the cosmetics industry can embrace modern, humane alternatives and ensure that consumer choices do not contribute to needless pain.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Director Makary,

Animal testing in the cosmetics industry remains a horrifying reality, with over 500,000 animals suffering immensely as they are burned, poisoned, or blinded for the development of makeup and other products. This barbaric practice should have no place in our society, especially when effective and safe alternatives are available. It is alarming that many well-known brands still rely on these cruel methods while misleading consumers into believing they are practicing ethically.

As the authority overseeing food and drug safety, the FDA has the power to enforce regulations that protect these vulnerable animals from suffering. Consumers have a right to choose cruelty-free products, yet companies perpetuate harm by using animals in testing. It is disheartening to witness the contradiction between claims of “clean” or “responsible” practices and the reality of laboratory harm that countless animals face daily.

We urge the FDA to take decisive action to end animal testing in cosmetics and to establish strict enforcement of cruelty-free standards within the industry. Animals should not have to endure pain and suffering for human vanity, and it is time for regulatory changes that reflect modern ethical standards.

Sincerely,
