End Cruel Surgeries Allegedly Performed on Live Dogs at Research Lab

Target: Michael F. Collins, Chancellor of the University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School

Goal: Remove researcher accused of causing extreme suffering to dogs from his position and stop cruel experiments on animals.

Recent revelations from PETA expose a disturbing pattern at the University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School, where baby pigs, ferrets, and other animals are allegedly subjected to neglect, deprivation of care, and horrific experiments. The most egregious allegations are against Matt Gounis, an experimenter whose grisly practices reportedly involve performing invasive surgeries on dogs, only to kill them following extended periods of extreme suffering. Gounis, alarmingly, chairs the very committee meant to oversee animal welfare at the university.

The allegations claim Gounis’ team purchases puppies as young as four months, subjecting them to grotesque procedures that include deep lacerations to the neck, exposure and grafting of blood vessels, and multiple subsequent surgeries that lead to extensive pain. Gounis is claimed to have classified highly invasive surgeries as “minor,” thereby bypassing essential safeguards.

Urgent action is required to rectify this situation. The ongoing cruelty reportedly faced by dogs under Gounis’ management at UMass Chan is not just a failure in compliance but a complete disregard for animal welfare. It is imperative that Gounis is removed from his oversight position and that the school ceases its participation in painful and archaic animal testing, transitioning instead to humane, non-animal research methods that respect and protect living beings.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Chancellor Collins,

A recent investigation by PETA has brought to light the horrific treatment of animals within the University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School, particularly under the direction of Matt Gounis. Reports indicate that dogs are subjected to severe pain through multiple invasive surgeries and are ultimately killed after enduring extensive suffering. Allegedly, Gounis not only carries out these experiments but also oversees the committee responsible for protecting these animals, raising serious ethical concerns regarding his influence on animal welfare decisions.

Gounis’ lab reportedly purchases puppies, subjecting them to life-altering procedures and leaving the animals to suffer in squalid conditions without adequate care. From deep lacerations to severe instances of neglect, the allegations paint a chilling picture of a facility that prioritizes research funding over the lives of innocent animals.

Therefore, we call upon you to immediately remove Matt Gounis from his position on the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee and put an end to animal experimentation at UMass Chan. It is time for the university to uphold ethical standards and commit to humane research methods that no longer involve unnecessary suffering.

Sincerely,
