Stop Alleged Cruel Experiments on 5,000 Monkeys

Target: Shereef Elnahal, President of Oregon Health & Science University

Goal: End all experiments on monkeys at the Oregon National Primate Research Center.

The Oregon National Primate Research Center stands at a critical juncture where a historic vote could finally end the suffering of nearly 5,000 monkeys subjected to inhumane experiments. Reports indicate that these primates endure extremely distressing conditions, many confined to cramped cages while some are subjected to full-body irradiation and even electro-ejaculation. It is alleged that pregnant monkeys are fed cannabis, and others are forced into alcohol addiction. An impending resolution by the university’s Board of Directors provides a vital opportunity to halt this cruel treatment for good.

PETA has documented extensive cases of alleged suffering within the research center during two undercover investigations. The proposal to phase out all experiments and end breeding is not just a victory for animal welfare but a necessary step towards embracing modern, humane, and scientifically valid research methods that prioritize ethical standards. This shift would allow the remaining monkeys to live free from pain and fear in a sanctuary environment, rather than continuing to endure the horrors of experimentation.

Demanding an end to these practices is not only a moral obligation but also a movement towards a progressive future in scientific research. The evidence against the Oregon National Primate Research Center’s operations seems compelling, and allowing this resolution to pass would reflect a commitment to humane and ethical treatment of all sentient beings. Therefore, it is imperative to urge the Board to adopt a resolution that prioritizes compassion over outdated and inhumane research practices.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear President Elnahal,

The Oregon National Primate Research Center has become synonymous with inhumane cruelty, as demonstrated by the findings from PETA’s investigations that reveal the torment allegedly endured by nearly 5,000 monkeys. Reports of monkeys being confined to small cages, subjected to full-body irradiation, electro-ejaculation, and unethical practices such as drugging pregnant mothers with cannabis and forcing addictions onto them illustrate the urgent need for change. With the upcoming vote to potentially end these experiments, the university has a unique opportunity to stand for ethics and compassion.

Transitioning the primate center from an institution of suffering is essential. As highlighted, the current practices do not yield applicable benefits for human health and undermine the university’s reputation. Embracing modern research methods that are more humane represents a progressive step forward for both science and animal welfare.

We implore you and the Board of Directors to pass the resolution to end all experiments on monkeys and plan for the conversion of the Oregon National Primate Research Center into a sanctuary. This decision can set an important precedent for humane treatment in scientific research, emphasizing that compassion should prevail in our scientific endeavors.

Sincerely,
