Stop Letting Farm Animals Freeze to Death in Extreme Winter Storms

Target: U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson

Goal: Stop the inhumane transport of farmed animals and ensure the passage of the Humane Transport of Farmed Animals Act to protect them from extreme weather conditions.

During extreme weather events like Winter Storm Fern, thousands of farmed animals are subjected to brutal conditions during transport across the United States, leading to severe suffering and, in many cases, death. Reports indicate that these animals are packed into trucks for long distances without adequate access to food, water, or shelter, exposing them to harsh temperatures and risking hypothermia, injury, and even death. Animals have seemingly been observed freezing to the floors and sides of transport trailers, suffering in silence until they reach their final destination.

Despite federal laws mandating rest periods for these animals, the existing 28-hour rule is widely viewed as insufficient and inadequately enforced. There exists no comprehensive system to monitor compliance with transport standards, particularly during extreme weather conditions. Allegations of negligence within the system have raised concerns over the welfare of countless animals, demonstrating an urgent need for better regulations and oversight.

The Humane Transport of Farmed Animals Act presents a crucial opportunity to address these inadequacies. By supporting this bill, lawmakers can enforce necessary protections for animals, enhance the accountability of transport practices, and ensure that no animal is left to suffer unduly during harsh weather events. It is imperative that action is taken now.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Speaker Johnson,

The recent severe weather caused by Winter Storm Fern has highlighted a disturbing reality faced by thousands of farmed animals in the United States. Allegations of extreme suffering during transport, where animals endure harsh conditions without proper access to food, water, or shelter, are unacceptable. While current laws mandate that animals be offloaded after 28 hours, the apparent failure to enforce these standards leaves them vulnerable to hypothermia and even death. Reports have shown animals freezing to the floors of trucks, suffering from extreme conditions, emphasizing the urgency for change.

Passage of the Humane Transport of Farmed Animals Act is necessary to ensure that basic protections are in place when animals are transported. This legislation would create a system of accountability and compliance with transport laws, thereby reducing unnecessary suffering and strengthening the welfare of these animals during their transit. The lack of oversight during severe weather events must be addressed to prevent future tragedies.

We urge you to support the Humane Transport of Farmed Animals Act to ensure the safety and humane treatment of farmed animals across the country. Taking action now can help protect these vulnerable creatures from suffering during extreme weather and create a more transparent and accountable transport system.

Sincerely,
