Stop Boiling Sentient Crustaceans Alive

Target: Julie Collins, Australia Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry

Goal: Implement stricter regulations to protect the welfare of crustaceans and prevent inhumane treatments in Australian fisheries.

Crustaceans, often consumed in large quantities during festive seasons in Australia, are capable of feeling pain and distress, yet many cruel practices persist in their treatment. Evidence suggests that these sentient beings can experience fear, as many are subjected to horrific conditions during capture and preparation. Yet, crabs and lobsters are often placed alive into boiling water, enduring potentially minutes of conscious pain. Some transport methods include strapping crabs together with cable ties, leading to suffering and dismemberment while still alive. The practices used on farms can be equally distressing, such as the horrific eyestalk ablation method performed on female prawns.

The evidence collected by scientists, including studies documenting the behaviors and stress responses of crustaceans, demonstrates their capacity for suffering similar to that of vertebrates. Nevertheless, Australia lacks comprehensive legal protections for crustaceans, unlike the United Kingdom and New Zealand, where laws recognize their sentience. In many Australian states, crustacean welfare is inadequately addressed in animal welfare regulations, leaving them vulnerable to inhumane treatment. Strikingly, there is a significant gap in public awareness regarding the emotional lives of these animals, which must be addressed to foster change.

The demand for action is urgent—crustaceans deserve legal recognition and humane treatment in Australia. Stricter regulations must be enacted to abolish cruel practices like boiling alive and ensure that animals are ethically caught and killed, in alignment with humane practices adopted for vertebrates. The time has come to prioritize the welfare of crustaceans and advocate for laws that protect them from suffering.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Minister Collins,

As advocates for animal welfare, we are deeply concerned with the treatment of crustaceans in Australia. Scientific evidence indicates that these beings possess the capacity to feel fear and pain, yet they continue to endure horrific treatment in fisheries and food industries. Reports describe practices where lobsters and crabs are boiled alive, often remaining conscious for extended periods during this agonizing process. Furthermore, methods of transport expose them to significant suffering, including being tightly bound and stacked, while many are dismembered while still alive.

Despite the acknowledgment of their sentience elsewhere, Australian laws lag behind, offering insufficient protection for crustaceans under animal welfare legislation. This discrepancy is alarming and calls for urgent action. The detrimental practices witness widespread cruelty and contribute to a disregard for ethical treatment of these animals, who should be afforded the same consideration as other sentient beings.

We implore you to take decisive steps towards implementing stricter regulations that ensure humane treatment of crustaceans throughout their lives, from capture to preparation. It is imperative that regulations are enhanced to outlaw problematic practices such as boiling alive and to establish humane standards for their treatment. Crustaceans are deserving of compassion and respect, and it is our duty to protect their welfare.

Sincerely,
