Stop Killing Protected Black Vultures

Target: Stewart Jacks, Acting Regional Director of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Southwest Office

Goal: Ensure appropriate investigations are conducted and punitive measures imposed against those allegedly harming protected black vultures.

Alarming reports surrounding the treatment of black vultures by some cattle farmers raise serious concerns about animal welfare and the ethical treatment of wildlife species. As reported, farmers in various regions have resorted to horrifying methods to deter black vultures, including using dead vulture carcasses as scare tactics. This practice seems to reflect a disturbing trend where the lives of these protected birds are sacrificed under the pretense of protecting livestock, despite the lack of sufficient scientific evidence to support claims that black vultures significantly threaten livestock populations.

Further complicating this matter is a newly proposed legislative bill that seeks to ease regulations on killing these scavenger birds in response to alleged livestock predation. This bill has garnered much support among cattle farmers, even though experts caution against the impulsive killing of black vultures. The indiscriminate culling of these birds not only poses a threat to their population but could also disturb ecological balances, as vultures perform vital roles in the ecosystem by cleaning up carrion and preventing the spread of disease.

Action must be taken to address this issue and ensure that wildlife protection laws are upheld. Enforcement is vital to prevent the exploitation of legal loopholes and the disrespect of protected species, ensuring that all farmers and stakeholders in the agricultural community adhere to ethical practices in wildlife management. Therefore, it is imperative to demand thorough investigations and appropriate punishments for those allegedly committing cruelty against black vultures.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Acting Director Jacks,

Recent reports indicate that certain cattle farmers have engaged in brutal practices to deter black vultures, including using the carcasses of dead vultures. These actions, as described, raise significant animal welfare concerns and suggest a violation of the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, under which these vultures are protected.

It is crucial to protect these scavengers and uphold current wildlife protection laws. Consequently, a rigorous investigation is warranted into these allegations, and appropriate punitive measures should be imposed on individuals or groups who are found to be harming black vultures. Action is needed to ensure responsible wildlife management reflects both ethical considerations and ecological responsibilities.

Sincerely,
