End the Inhumane Treatment of People and Animals in Factory Farms

Target: Brooke Rollins, US Secretary of Agriculture

Goal: End abusive practices in factory farming and implement measures for better animal welfare standards.

Factory farming has been implicated in a system that abuses both animals and the humans who work within it. U.S. contract chicken farmers face exploitation by large corporations, while slaughterhouse workers are subjected to some of the worst welfare conditions globally. This troubling scenario highlights a dire need for accountability in agricultural practices, especially as the demand for meat increases, leading to intensified production and greater confinement of animals in small enclosures. The result is not only a decline in animal welfare but also mental health struggles for farmers who often suppress their emotional responses to the slaughter of animals, attempting to distance themselves from the harsh realities of their work.

With the increasing trend of prioritizing productivity over the intrinsic needs of animals, many report feeling significant emotional distress regarding their livelihoods. Despite the recognition of animals as sentient beings capable of emotions, widespread behavior change in farming practices remains elusive. Farmers have noted that economic motivations overwhelmingly dictate their decision-making processes, often sidelining animal welfare in favor of profits. Consequently, improved welfare standards and alternative farming methods are rare, even when emotional burdens are acknowledged.

Change within the food system is imperative. Allegations of inherent abuses and exploitation throughout the industry not only merit further investigation but also demand actionable reforms. Immediate steps must be taken to end these abusive practices and encourage a shift towards farm systems that prioritize animal welfare, sustainability, and the mental health of farmers.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Secretary Rollins,

Ongoing practices within factory farming foster an abusive environment for both animals and workers. U.S. contract chicken farmers are frequently exploited by large corporations, while slaughterhouse workers experience some of the poorest welfare standards globally. These troubling conditions are largely driven by an excessive focus on profit and production, which undermines animal welfare and contributes to emotional distress among farmers.

The evidence suggests that while many farmers acknowledge the sentience of animals, this does not translate into responsible farming practices. Instead, financial incentives continue to dictate agricultural decisions, often at the expense of robust welfare standards and ethical considerations. Compounding this issue are the mental health struggles faced by farmers who grapple with the emotional toll of their practices.

The time to reform this deeply flawed system is now. Urgent action is required to ensure that factories transition to sustainable and humane practices.

Sincerely,
