End Horrific Abuse at Dogfighting Operations

Target: Travis Page, District Attorney of Gaston County, NC

Goal: Ensure justice is served for the victims of dogfighting by supporting stricter enforcement and punishment for animal cruelty.

The case of Rico Pagan serves as a grim reminder of the brutality inherent in dogfighting and animal cruelty. Pagan, convicted of four counts of felony dogfighting and 13 counts of animal cruelty, faced justice after the disturbing discovery of two decomposed dogs in a wooded area. The subsequent investigation revealed that nine dogs were seized from Pagan’s residence, suffering from severe malnourishment, cruel restraints, and serious injuries consistent with the horrors of dogfighting. The presence of gruesome paraphernalia, such as weighted collars and rugs stained with canine blood, paints an alarming picture of the extensive suffering inflicted upon these innocent animals.

Further investigation reportedly led to additional dogs being rescued from Pagan’s property years later, indicating a continuous cycle of abuse. The involvement of dedicated organizations such as the Gaston County Police, Animal Care and Enforcement, and Humane World for Animals was vital in addressing this issue. As stated by District Attorney Travis Page, “Dogfighting is a brutal and senseless crime that causes immense suffering to animals and endangers our communities.” This conviction must be a turning point for how authorities combat such heinous acts of cruelty and the necessity for collective action against those who exploit and harm vulnerable animals.

The demand for justice is clear: it is essential that local authorities prioritize the enforcement of stricter penalties and preventive measures against dogfighting and related crimes. Increased awareness and legislation must be pursued to protect animals from such brutality. The time has come to take a firm stand and ensure that the suffering of these animals is not in vain.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear DA Page,

The recent case involving Rico Pagan serves as a horrifying testament to the ongoing problem of dogfighting and animal cruelty. Pagan not only pleaded guilty to serious felony charges but faced conviction for heinous acts that included the severe maltreatment of numerous dogs. The images of decomposed dogs and suffering animals extracted from his property highlight the urgent need for intervention and a more robust legal approach to combat these cruel practices.

As reported, the conditions these dogs were subjected to included severe malnourishment, extreme cruelty, and the presence of dogfighting equipment that indicates a systematic and violent practice of exploitation. The involvement of law enforcement and animal welfare organizations demonstrated a necessary commitment to rescuing these victims, but it is essential that this fight continues to ensure safer communities and protect animals who cannot defend themselves.

It is critical that the severity of these crimes is met with proportional legal consequences, including advocacy for stronger laws and enforcement against dogfighting. We urge you to continue to prioritize this issue and ensure that justice is served, not only for the victims of this case but for all animals suffering from similar fates.

Sincerely,
