Stop Torturing Civet Cats in Tiny, Filthy Cages to Make Coffee

Target: Prabowo Subianto, President of Indonesia

Goal: Hold accountable those allegedly responsible for the inhumane treatment of civet cats in the production of kopi luwak coffee.

A recent investigation by PETA Asia has reportedly uncovered appalling conditions endured by Asian palm civet cats housed in deplorable environments for the production of kopi luwak coffee. Investigators, who visited several farms in Java, Indonesia, reportedly discovered animals confined in cramped wire cages soiled with their own feces. Many of these civet cats allegedly displayed severe health issues, including bloody wounds and significant fur loss, suggesting malnourishment and parasitic infections. Alarming footage appears to show a critically ill civet, too weak to stand, languishing in a filthy cage, eerily reflecting a complete disregard for the welfare of these creatures.

The investigation further revealed that civet cats are reportedly subjected to extreme confinement, manifesting in alarming behaviors indicative of zoochosis, a condition often arising from immense psychological stress. These animals are reportedly forced to consume excessive amounts of coffee cherries, all while being deprived of their natural habitat. In an even more disturbing aspect, PETA Asia alleged that some farms are illegally housing binturongs, a vulnerable species, to fraudulently enhance the production of civet coffee. It appears this manipulation not only fuels the cycle of cruelty but also compromises the integrity of the kopi luwak industry, which is rife with exploitation.

The need for immediate action is pressing. The continued abuse and mistreatment of civet cats not only raises serious ethical concerns but also poses significant public health risks associated with zoonotic diseases. As the kopi luwak industry continues to thrive amid reports of cruelty and deception, it is imperative for authorities to act decisively. There must be appropriate legal consequences for those reportedly responsible for the inhumane treatment of these animals and the fraudulent practices within this sector.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Governor,

This petition is to address the disturbing allegations uncovered by PETA Asia regarding the treatment of civet cats in the production of kopi luwak coffee in Java, Indonesia. Reports indicate that these animals are confined in cramped cages, suffering from severe health issues, and displaying behaviors associated with extreme psychological stress. A shocking video reportedly displays a critically ill civet cat, weak and motionless in its filthy cage, further exemplifying the grievous conditions these animals endure.

The investigation suggests that beyond the cruelty faced by the civet cats, there are significant ethical concerns tied to the fraudulent marketing practices within the kopi luwak coffee industry. The alleged manipulation involving vulnerable species such as binturongs for profit highlights a widespread cycle of exploitation that cannot be tolerated. This apparent exploitation raises serious questions not only about animal welfare but also about public health risks tied to the potential spread of zoonotic diseases known to be associated with civet cats.

In light of these alarming findings, it is imperative that immediate action is taken. Hold accountable those allegedly responsible for these inhumane practices, enforcing strict penalties to deter further cruelty in the kopi luwak industry. The time has come to ensure that our laws reflect a commitment to the protection of animals and the integrity of our ethical standards.

Sincerely,

No animal should be forced to exist in their own excrement and forced to eat coffee berries just so you can have a cup of coffee? This is truly revolting. There is so much abuse people inflict upon animals for profit and exploitation. The Kopi luwak industry I am sure is just one of many. I to believe the time has come to have stricter laws, regulations and harsher penalties given to the abusers. Also honest people watching over these industies.
