Target: André C. Wade, Nevada State Director of Silver State Equality
Goal: Applaud relentless efforts of LGBTQ+ activists who fought for marriage equality.
Marriage equality is now protected under the law, regardless of what America’s new conservative-majority Supreme Court decides. In the state of Nevada, after decades of relentless activism and legal battles, marriage equality got a spot on the ballot. Over two-thirds of state voters elected to protect same-sex marriage in their state’s constitution.
This step marks a celebratory conclusion to a long-fought battle that pitted human rights activists against conservative legislators and nonprofits. The constitution of Nevada had previously defined marriage as a union between a man and a woman. It is one of 30 states to explicitly have done so. However, with this reversal, should the U.S. Supreme Court ever reverse its decision on same-sex marriage and make it illegal, marriages will still be legal in the state, offering protection for Nevada’s LGBTQ+ community. Equal rights and similar protections have been called for time and time again, as seen in countless ForceChange petitions.
Nevada has set a precedent that other states would do well to follow. Thank the state’s largest LGBTQ+ group for so relentlessly fighting for the rights of its community.
PETITION LETTER:
Dear Director Wade,
After decades of fighting, Nevada’s LGBTQ community has won the fight to have same-sex marriage recognized and protected by the state’s constitution. No matter what the future holds in the U.S. Supreme Court, the citizens of Nevada can rest assured that their marriage will be protected in your state.
Your organization, its members, and the state’s thousands of other LGBTQ+ activists have played a significant role in this achievement and in getting this decision a spot on the ballot. I thank you for never giving up the fight. I only hope that other states follow your lead.
Sincerely,
[Your Name Here]
