Success: President Obama Bans Imported Products Made by Forced or Slave Labor

Target: President Barack Obama

Goal: Applaud the ban on importing products made by forced or slave labor.

Thanks in part to petitions like ForceChange’s End Modern Day Slavery, President Obama has signed a law banning the import of products made by forced or slave labor. The law is vital because it closes a loophole in the Tariff Act of 1930 that still allowed these products to be brought into the U.S. when the products are in short supply in the U.S., known as consumptive demand.

When the law goes into effect, 136 goods from 74 countries will no longer be imported into the U.S. According to a recent report by the Department of Labor, the goods mostly made with child labor and forced labor are fish, coffee, sugarcane, cotton, tobacco, alcohol, leather and cattle. The perpetrators of forced labor earn about $150 billion per year in illegal profits.

It’s ridiculous that for decades the U.S. allowed these products to enter the market, but hopefully this law will put an end to the support of these corrupt systems. Sign this petition to applaud President Obama for signing this vital law to put an end to supporting slave labor.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear President Obama,

You recently signed a law that will ban the import of products made by forced or slave labor into the U.S. It’s a shame that a loophole in the Tariff Act of 1930 allowed these goods to enter the U.S. for so many years, but I’m glad that you are finally taking a stand against slave labor and forced labor by ending support of these goods.

It is up to us as a country to fight against horrible systems like this that ruin lives and terrorize children and the poor. I applaud you for signing this law and taking a stand against slave labor.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]
