The Louisiana school voucher program is intended to allow students from failing public schools to attend private schools. This program has met with much controversy because several of the schools on the voucher program are religion-based and refuse to teach state-required science curricula including the theory of evolution. Ask Governor Jindal to remove private schools that do not teach the state-approved science curriculum from the voucher program.

The widespread use of antibiotics in livestock and poultry is contributing to an increase in antibiotic-resistant disease. Trader Joe’s national specialty food markets already offer some drug-free meat products. It’s time for them to take a stand and offer only drug-free meat to their consumers.
Despite controversy, Shell was granted a permit to commence with an off shore oil drilling project in the Arctic. Since applying for their permit, however, Shell has failed to demonstrate an acceptable level of concern for the environmental risks and potential for ecological disaster associated with kind of venture. It’s time for the EPA to reject Shell’s drilling application and stop this project before we have another oil spill on our hands.
Each year, Crayola manufactures enough markers to circle the globe three times. If Crayola were to implement an exchange program for its used markers, it could result in a significant reduction of plastic manufacturing by the company and help keep discarded markers out of our landfills and oceans. Urge Crayola to reduce its impact on the planet by implementing a marker exchange program.
An owner allowed his three pit bulls to savagely attack and maul his pony that was tied to a fence post. While this attack occurred, the owner just stood by and watched. The man did not attempt to control the dogs until police on the scene threatened to shoot them and by then, it was too late to save the helpless horse. Please ask the local district attorney to prosecute this man for cruelty and neglect.
The Ross Sea is a pristine coastal sea near Antarctica that supports a rich and diverse marine ecosystem. However, commercial fishing threatens to destroy this thriving ecosystem. We must protect this pristine ocean ecosystem before it is too late.
With the ‘beak trimming’ of hens, the tip of the beak is cut or burned off with no pain medication causing trauma to the animal. Because the nerves of the beak are directly connected to the head and face of the chicken, the bird suffers severely. The poultry industry believes that because this pain is temporary, it is justifiable. However, this cruel and torturous treatment of chickens must be stopped.
The African hirola antelope is facing extinction as its numbers decline at an alarming rate. As the only living member of the mammal genus Beatragus its extinction would mean the end of the entire genus. While conservation efforts have been underway for some time, the Kenyan Wildlife Service has fallen short in its duties to monitor poaching and protect the grazing lands of this animal. With a population of less than 500, the hirola needs to be better protected.
Alligator farming is big business in Louisiana. Some of the common means of slaughtering alligators include clubbing them in the head with hammers and bats, using axes to cut their spinal cords to immobilize them and shooting them repeatedly with bang sticks. In many cases, alligators are skinned while they are fully conscious. To think that this type of practice is occurring within the borders of the United States is shameful and abhorrent.
Although cockfighting technically became illegal in Louisiana in 2008, penalties are so weak that there has been little deterrent to this cruel animal bloodsport. Tell Louisiana that cockfighting is not a part of their ‘culture’ and that real penalties for those involved with cockfighting are needed to protect these innocent animals.
Undercover video of a Butterball turkey farm has exposed violent and cruel treatment of these animals. Disturbing images show employees dragging birds by their necks, wings, or legs and even throwing them into the sides of trucks. This abuse cannot be tolerated and criminal prosecutions must be brought.
Calves used for veal production on many factory farms spend their short, solitary lives confined to small wooden crates where they are fed diets lacking key nutrients. These young animals suffer severe physical and psychological trauma as a result of this confinement but the U.S. Government has yet to take a stand to improve their living conditions.
Tail docking is a procedure by which up to two thirds of a cow’s tail is removed either with a sharp instrument or by using a tight rubber ring to cut off the blood supply. This procedure, intended to improve sanitary conditions for the cattle and farm workers, causes pain and psychological trauma for the cattle and has proven to provide little or no actual sanitary benefits.
Obesity is a life threatening problem facing one third of the children in Louisiana and 63% of Louisiana adults, yet the state allows public schools to provide meals high in fat and sodium to their children each day. Please ask the Louisiana Board of Elementary and Secondary Education to take a stand against childhood obesity and demand healthy school meals.
The snubfin dolphin is a shy marine mammal only recently recognized as an individual species. This dolphin is found exclusively off the Northern coast of Australia and its existence is being threatened by fishing nets, boats and habitat pollution. Please ask the Australian Minister of the Environment to help the snubfin dolphin before it’s too late.
Pennsylvania is the only U.S. state that allows private hunting clubs to engage in live pigeon shoots, an event where live pigeons are launched in the air to be gunned down by waiting hunters. Pennsylvania is finally considering a ban on this cruel activity, however pro-gun lobbyists are working hard against it. Pigeon shoots are unsportsmanlike, torturous to the birds and should be banned.
Despite the vulnerable status of the polar bear, commercial and sport hunting of these animals continues in Canada. Polar bear numbers have already been declining due to the effects of pollution and climate change, yet the Canadian government continues to issue hunting permits for polar bears. Canada must end this total disregard for the future of this majestic species and protect its remaining polar bears from destruction.
As other department stores have eliminated the sale of all live animals within their stores, Walmart is notorious for continuing to stock aquatic animals in horrible conditions cared for by inexperienced and poorly trained employees. Please ask Walmart CEO Michael Duke to remove these animals from his stores immediately.
Auto industry lobbyists are voicing opposition to President Obama’s target goal of 60-mpg fuel efficiency by 2025, even though the EPA and U.S. Department of Transportation have said this goal is attainable. Tell President Obama to stand firm against the automakers cynical attempts to be held to lower fuel efficiency standards.
Each winter the wild American bison of Yellowstone National Park face cruel hazing practices and possible slaughter by ranchers as they venture from the confines of the park in search of acceptable grazing land. This ritualistic taunting and killing of the last genetically pure herd of bison in the United States is both condoned and accepted by the Federal Government and must be stopped.
The coyote population in Halifax County, Virginia is multiplying by the hundreds each year. Officials there are currently considering the use of poison and cruel leg-hold traps to reduce the coyote’s numbers and the potential risk that they may pose to livestock, pets and farmers. Let Halifax County know that these practices are unethical and inhumane and urge them to take a more humane approach.
The critically endangered leatherback sea turtle is at risk of losing its most popular nesting site in the United States. In 2009, the Governor of Puerto Rico removed the Nature Preserve designation for the wild beaches of the Northeast Ecological Corridor and is currently discussing plans to allow development in parts of the area.
The KG Dogfighting application available through the Google Android marketplace allows users to train and fight virtual dogs to the death. Google has refused to remove this controversial application despite public outcry. This app glamorizes the illegal act of dog fighting and should be removed from the market.
Bisphenol A, known as BPA is a chemical used in the manufacture of hard plastics. It can also be found in the linings of food and soft drink containers. Though previously considered safe, BPA has come under scrutiny as trace amounts of the chemical are known to leech into food products and may be harmful, particularly to young children. In light of this, several food manufacturers have started to use BPA-free can linings. Campbell’s Soup Company is not one of them.
The Nevada Wildlife Commission is currently reviewing the State’s stand on leg-hold traps. These barbaric traps are designed to violently snap closed on the leg of animal and prevent its escape. These traps cause mutilation, broken limbs, and the death and suffering of millions of animals each year. Non-target animals including household pets are also also killed in these traps each year.
