Commend Chinese Actress for Environmental Support

Target: Famed Actress Zhou Xun

Goal: Thank Chinese actress Zhou Xun for publicly advocating for environmental issues and encouraging other celebrities to do the same

Environmental issues centered in China make news headlines every day, yet  few Chinese celebrities have taken a public stand for environmental sustainability. After watching the documentary, “An Inconvenient Truth,” in 2006, Chinese actress, Zhou Xun, dedicated herself to raising awareness about environmental protection in China. The United Nations Environmental Program named her a “Champion of the Earth,” and she was the first entertainer in the world to receive the honor.

“I knew very little about environmental changes at the time, but I felt I should do something in a huge country like China, Xun said. “And an opportunity soon came to me.” In recent years, Xun has created a comic book series with tips for green living, as a way to simplify complicated environmental issues and catch the attention of the people in her country.

Xun worked with prominent Chinese fashion magazines to develop environmental protection themes and publications. The editor-in-chief for Time Out magazine in China commented, “Zhou was the only one with such ideas who actively advocated related campaigns, and her life concept was absolutely environmentally friendly.”

Xun plants trees to offset her carbon footprint from job-related car and plane travel. In fact, she recently bought and planted over 200 tree saplings in Tongliao, north China’s inner Mongolia region. Sign the below petition to commend this actress for taking a stand for the environment and encouraging other Chinese celebrities to follow her lead.

Dear Ms. Xun,

Your championing efforts for the environment have not gone unnoticed by world leaders, and you should be commended for your bold and creative ways to bring attention to China’s most devastating environmental issues. Your environmental campaign work at film festivals, in magazine publications, and at the grassroots level is admirable. Since you became an outspoken advocate in the mid-2000’s, you have been an inspiration for your fans and other celebrities in China and around the world.

I am urging you to continue to create, innovate, and devise new ways to use your fame to bring public awareness to China’s environmental issues. Please collaborate with magazine editors, film directors, television producers, and online media sources to educate and inform the Chinese public about the causes you deeply care about. And hopefully, other prominent actors, actresses, musicians, and celebrities will soon follow in your footsteps.

  2. I know it’s easy to think that China’s environmental problems are limited to their country, but the fact remains that the air pollution that is produced in mainland China is distributed globally in the atmosphere… as is all the carbon released by the unregulated energy production going on right now in China.
