Raise Wages to Help Millions in Poverty

Target: President Barack Obama

Goal: Increase minimum wage to pull millions out of poverty across the United States

There are currently 46.5 million Americans living below the poverty level. Approximately 16.1 million of that number are children. If the minimum wage were increased by a few simple dollars, 4.6 million hardworking people could be lifted out of poverty immediately. Currently, there is a proposal passing through the legislative branches that supports increasing the minimum wage, an action that would have an incredibly positive effect on millions of lives. Sign this petition and support raising the minimum wage to help pull these human beings out of lives where they do not have adequate food, shelter, or health care.

During the recent recession, poverty levels rose 3.4% in the country. By raising the minimum wage, half of those people put into poverty by the recession would be immediately brought out. Economist Arindrajit Dube analyzed 23 years of data on minimum wage increases, and calculated that by bringing the minimum wage up to $10.10 per hour, it would bring the line up where it should be if minimum wage had kept up with inflation over the last 50 years. The current federal wage is $7.25 per hour, where it has stayed for the past four years. That is not enough to keep a parent who works full-time, year-round above the poverty level. It is also not enough to make market rent in a single state in the country. Minimum wage used to be designed in a way that it could keep a family of two above the poverty line, and in the 1960s it kept a family of three above the poverty line. This is no longer the case.

With so many millions of people suffering across the country, it seems clear that something must be done immediately to help. By simply bringing the minimum wage up to the level it should be at if it had been properly matched with inflation, nearly 5 million people will be brought above the poverty line instantly. And researchers say that it would also help millions more as time goes on, as well. Sign this petition to raise minimum wage and help fight rampant poverty.

Dear President Obama,

As I’m sure you are aware, poverty is a large problem for this country. As you mentioned in your February address, you support the need for raising the minimum wage. Unfortunately, since then, not a lot of action has been taken. However, a Fair Minimum Wage Act has been written, and should it pass through, I ask that you sign it into action.

At this very moment, there are 46.5 million Americans living below the poverty level. Approximately 1/3 of that number are children. By raising the minimum wage to match the rate of inflation of the past 50 years, we would be helping millions of citizens be able to have proper food, shelter, and health care–necessary essentials to life. I support raising the minimum wage and hope you will make good on your word.
