Stop Illegal Mass Bird Slaughter

Target: President of Cyprus, Nicos Anastasiades and the Cyprus Government

Goal: Ask the Cyprus Government to enforce their laws on bird slaughtering

Cyprus, a small island in the Mediterranean Sea, has become a frightening place for the migrating birds that pass over it. On average, 14 million birds are illegally trapped every year by the Cyprus population. Demand the Cyprus government stop this mass poaching and capture of migrating birds.

The Cyprus poachers set up bird nets in olive groves and flower gardens, affecting many species of birds- of which at least seventy are endangered. Among the group, warblers and thrushes are two types of birds that are caught the most, but cuckoos are caught in these traps as well. After the birds are caught, they are then sold to the market or high-end restaurants and are considered to be delicacies.

Strict laws on bird trapping in Cyprus have sentences of up to $23,000 or three years in prison. However, even though bird trapping has long been banned in Cyprus, poachers continue to break the law anyway and have suffered no consequences. Some poachers do not even feel the need to conceal their traps because the population is unaware of the major problem. Furthermore, the police in Cyprus do not have enough control to successfully combat the problem.

Please sign this petition to tell the Cyprus government to enforce the their bird laws.

Dear President of Cyprus, Nicos Anastasiades and the Cyprus Government,

Cyprus is a stopping place for millions of migrant birds across the Eastern Mediterranean. Unfortunately, right now illegal shooting of birds is persistent in Cyprus. Although there is a law put in place to combat against poachers who illegally trap birds with lime sticks in groves and gardens, there is no enforcement of that law. Poachers are making these traps out in the open and not suffering the consequences for it. As the president of Cyprus, please find a way to enforce this law. If police officers were more vigilant and report poachers then there would be a dramatic decrease in bird slaughters in Cyprus.

The millions of migrant birds come to Cyprus and make the island beautiful and majestic. Please help save them from this awful poachers who commit these crimes.
