Target: Hank Hunt, father of deceased woman
Goal: Require that hotels allow 911 to be dialed without having to use a ‘dial-out’ number first
A movement has been started that will require hotels to allow guests to dial 911 without having to dial a number prior. This movement, called “Kari’s Law,” would potentially save many lives, as many people do not remember to dial out first when using a hotel phone during an emergency. Encourage this movement to make dialing 911 simple, always.
“Kari’s Law” was created because of a tragic incident that happened in a hotel room, December of 2013. Kari Rene Hunt-Dunn was meeting her soon-to-be ex-husband, Brad, at a hotel; her three young girls were with her for a visitation with their father. Upon arrival, Brad attacked Kari with a knife in an attempt to kill her. The couple’s nine-year-old daughter tried to dial 911 repeatedly in order to get her mother help, but could not reach a dispatcher due to the hotel’s multiple-line system, which requires dialing a ‘9’ first to get an outside line. Kari was found dead when authorities did arrive; she may have been saved, had her daughter been able to reach authorities at the start of the attack.
Kari’s father, Hank Hunt, has launched a movement that, if successful, will require that all hotels and motels reprogram their systems so that when someone dials 911 they will get a dispatcher. Children are taught that if someone is in danger, dialing 911 is the best thing to do. Kari’s little girl was not able to help her, even though she repeatedly did what she was taught. “Kari’s Law” will ensure that millions of lives are saved. Hank Hunt has started a petition on another site that has gained thousands of signatures; sign this petition to give Hank more signatures to gain justice for his daughter.
Dear Hank Hunt,
I am writing to encourage your movement of enacting “Kari’s Law.” I support the movement to create a law that will require all hotels and motels to reprogram their multi-line systems to allow guests to dial 911 and immediately get a dispatcher on the line. Adults and children alike instinctively know to dial 911 in case of an emergency. I believe receiving medical help should not be complicated in any way, including by multi-line systems that confuse those in a state of panic.
What happened to Kari is incredibly tragic. This movement will save millions of lives in her honor. Please use my signature, and all others that this petition generates, to make “Kari’s Law” an official law.
