Target: Chief Executive of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Leung Chun Ying
Goal: Save the beautiful and threatened Chinese white dolphin from extinction
The waters surrounding Hong Kong, China were once home to hundreds of Chinese white dolphins. However after years of habitat degradation caused by coastal development, marine vessel disturbances, and water pollution, it is now estimated that only 60 Chinese white dolphins live in the city’s local waters.
Known for their light pink coloring, the Chinese white dolphin has been Hong Kong’s mascot for more than 15 years. This iconic and intelligent creature is drawn to the area’s less salty seaways—a result of fresh water from the Pearl River mixing with, and slightly diluting, the saltwater of the South China Sea.
Currently, less than two percent of Hong Kong waters have been designated as Marine Protected Areas. In order to help secure the future population of the Chinese white dolphin, the protected area must be expanded to include the waters of the West Lantau and Soko Islands. Designating these waters as marine parks would dramatically increase the size of the Chinese white dolphins’ habitat and mating grounds, allowing them to live free from life-threatening marine traffic and commercial fishing.
By signing this petition, you are urging the Hong Kong government to expand the size of its marine park proposal to include the surrounding waters of the West Lantau and Soko Islands, creating a larger, safer habitat for the Chinese white dolphin.
Dear Chief Executive of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Leung Chun Ying,
Due to habitat degradation from coastal development, marine vessel disturbance, prey depletion, and water pollution, the Chinese white dolphin population has dropped significantly in recent years. As a result, Hong Kong’s mascot is dangerously near extinction with only 60 Chinese white dolphins believed to be living in local waters.
Expanding Marine Protected Areas would increase the Chinese white dolphins’ habitat, providing them with a larger, safer area to repopulate and live free from busy marine traffic and commercial fishing.
I urge you to help prevent the extinction of the Chinese white dolphin by choosing to expand the size of Hong Kong’s 2002 marine park proposal to include the waters of the West Lantau and Soko Islands. By designating these areas as marine parks, you can help secure the future of this beautiful, intelligent and iconic creature before it’s too late.
